Graphics Cards
February 2nd, 2023
Well if you just browse the net, play videos, and use Office etc. then the answer is that you have already overspent! lol
I’ll assume that you game. You might want to check this out:

Your mobo supports a second card. You might have to add a cooling system; don’t see your PSU specs but that may need an upgrade too. All and all, I would say that if you are happy with your gaming experience, wait as the potential expense of cooling/psu would go along ways to upgrading your system later.
If you aren’t happy, you have to consider replacing your 780 with something newer vs buying a second card. So I guess the big question …….. what is your happiness factor?
i loved ‘s latest question ofc second gpu will give you performance increase but not like i get 50 fps with single 780 ti , i get 100 fps with 2 of them , consider it like u get 75 fps , it has a calculation method but it is always good to know with basics.
currently only 1 single gpu card more powerful than 780ti which is gtx 980 , it has %7-8 performance increase over 780ti in terms of 1080p gaming as most of us use. so it isnt wise to buy it for now. but if you mention about complete whole system , i suggest you to do that , your cpu is first generation , it may have problems with handling 2 gpu. also u need at least 650W + 80 psu for 2 780ti . 2 way sli is generally used for when even the most powerful single gpu’s capacity is not enough , for example for 4K gaming , or u do it for fun. always single gpu is better for the reasons 1 – dual gpu is not as stable as single gpu , where you may face sudden fps drops and increases
2- dual gpu sometimes cause problems with games like you get fps far lower than u should , game either gets patched after or u should disable dual gpu and use single one
3- some games doesnt support dual gpu at all , then u will play these games with only 1 gpu . but blockbuster games always supports it these were worse in the past now it is generally fixed . actually there is a user named , he may give you insight than me , since gpus are his hobby
edit : the problem that may occur due to your cpu is called , bottleneck of gpu , u may search about it , i need detailed specifications and architecture of your cpu to decide if 2 gpu can cause bottleneck with your cpu , but i dont have them , and it is also hard to find such info since it is old cpu
I dont really think you need another 780, especially since it will probably get bottlenecked by your processor any ways. That being said, you dont even need anything more than a 780 unless you’re into 4K gaming, and if that is the case, 2 780s might still not be enough
Also, you’d probably need at least a 700w, 800w would be preferred for you build (seeing that you have many hard drives) I personally would wait a year or two before upgrading anything
Is it worth getting an 2nd card? Yes and no. It depends on what size of your monitor and at what resolution your playing games with. Also are you playing surround with 3+ monitors.
If your running game with only 1 monitor like 27″ @1080p. An 2nd card wont give you much benefits. Your card will only go up to 3gb anyways even if you add another card. You will see some improvement but like I said. With an example of 27″ @1080p. Not much improvement when you added the money factor in.
Personally. I think if you want to go SLI.. Tri SLI…. Quad SLI….. Do it at the same time when you buy an flagship card. Dont wait since it probably not worth it in the end when you decided to do SLI and there are an few newer flagship out.

You pointed out some very good example. But the reality is. If you buy the game. Most likely it will solve itself since what causing the frame drop for SLI and sometimes for single card is the game patch itself. Sometimes the GPU driver. If your prirate the game. Sometimes patch get crack. Sometimes not. Meaning if the crack game v1.0 has sli bug/problem. Game update but no crack. Your going to play on an single card
SLI is damn great since new game are getting more and more demanding. That extra edge you get from SLI can be an high setting or ultra setting with playable fps. Of course like I said. It also depending on your monitor and resolution.
Of course there are also bottleneck but you can google that yourself since I am not that great with cpu but surly do research before buying.
gtx 980 -> gtx 970 -> gtx 780ti x2 if you get another 780ti you will be getting more fps obviously. and i would advise just buying 2x 970s as they are newer technology ( everybody says they are weaker than 780ti LOL) but the truth is they have new technology which requires less resources. i think you will be ok with the cpu lol… but not for any much longer . the games these days they conserve more and more of gpu rather then cpu like in the old days ~love~ ports would go eat your cpu alive… but now more gpu is being used.
another 780ti will be like one 980 or a gtx 970 and another “third” of a gtx 970 if you get that part haha.
Thank you all for your replies, I do currently have a 850w PSU.
My main asking of the questions was really to get feed back whether to upgrade to SLI or upgrade the CPU, motherboard and memory.
I do realise that the current system I have will/does have intermittent CPU load issues which happen once every hour – hour and a half when gaming but doesn’t cause to much disruption so it is something I can put up with for until Broadwell/Skylake make an appearence (so it looks like I will be keeping my current PC the way it is for now).
Once again thank you
I would do it if i were you.
