Setting up a home netwrok?

I’m using windows XP and want to know how to set up a home network between my computer and another computer in the house.
We both connect to the internet through a router, all I want is to be able to do is share files between the two computers as well as allow both computers to use a printer that is connected to my computer.
How do I actually do this?

Both of computer how are connected to router, using switch or directly if u are using a switch between to computers and the router that’s very simple just watch the IP address of computer ex:
Computer1: IP 192.168.1.17, SubnetMask 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway 192.168.1.1
Computer2: IP 192.168.1.26, SubnetMask 255.255.255.0 Defualt Gateway 192.168.1.1
(you can see the ip address for a computer by gooing to CMD (command Prompt “start – run – cmd” and type ipconfig /all)
to share files explained you how to do that just share a folder and from the other computer go to start – run and type \\192.168.1.17 (or what is the ip address of the other computer and you can share files between computer
to share a printer. if its a printer attached to a computer thorugh USB Cable, just share the printer like u share folders set everyone group Print Permissions(in printers and faxes in control panel – right click the printer and chose sharing , share this printer … ) and from other computer start – run and type \\192.168.1.17 (or what is the ip address of print server, exactly the computer that has the printer attached to it) and u see the printer, just double click and wait until its finished and you can go to printers and faxes and try to print a test page. (you can print only when the print server is powered on)
but if are connected directly to router, buy a switch and try the method I explained to you
cuz I dont think that the ISP let access you to configure or to login to the ISP Router.
Note: both of computers need to be in the same WORKGROUP
How to see to which workgroup the computer belongs
right click to my computer – chose properties – computer name – change and you see the workgroup name.
