August 18th, 2013

okay so i have a router/modem from verizon fios and i have a router that i bought a NETGEAR WNR2000. I disabled the router from the verizon fios part and it connects and everything but when i disable the dhcp on the NETGEAR router it doesn’t connect my ps3… It only connects my laptop and my ipod both wireless and my desktop but i can’t connect my ps3 wired or wireless… So what does dhcp mean? Why can’t i connect my ps3 wired or wireless when i disable dhcp on the netgear?

DHCP = Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. It gives your devices IP addresses automatically, which they need to access your network. No DHCP means you need to assign a static/manual IP address. Therefore, no DHCP means no network access without giving an IP to the device yourself.

When you get a DHCP address, you keep it for a certain amount of time (“lease period”). Usually it’s about a week. If your laptop and phone got one when DHCP was running, they’ll still have it.

It won’t connect same even with wired.. but when i enable the dhcp on the router it works so what is dhcp? my other modem/router has the dhcp connection type my other modem/router is my provided by my ISP so i can’t disable that or no internet connection at all.

as stated above dhcp makes sure that every device has a different logical address. in this case everydevice would get a different ip address so they will not conflict with each other.
please explain why you do not want dhcp? dhcp will make it much easier for you to connect devices.

Ok, so you have a couple options…
Log into your routers interface, and try to figure out what is wrong there,
Or set the PS3 to obtain a static IP adddress.
Go to the laptop that works,
Open the start menu, and type CMD, and hit enter (if you are on windows 7)
In the Black command prompt windows, type IPCONFIG
which will give you your ip address, and gateway, and other information
Go into the PS3 network configuration, and set it up using the gateway that you received from IPCONFIG and then just choose an IP address close to your computers and use that…. so if your gateway is 192.168.1.1 and your IP address is 192.168.1.53 then choose a static IP of something like…. 192.168.1.58 or 192.168.1.158 or just anything that is not in use by another device on your network.
and you can use that gateway IP address that you found from CMD to log into your router and make sure everything is configured properly, and you can also see what IP addresses are in use and pretty much any other info you need…
