Am I going to get in trouble for not paying tax? I’m 15 now

September 7th, 2013

Hi,
I turned 15 in november and I’m designing websites to get money… so far i’ve earned about £2000 and I was wondering if I will get in trouble for not paying tax? I live in London (UK).
Do I really have to pay tax even though I just became 15? I tried googling it but there doesn’t seem to be any advice for self-employed teens.
Thanks in advance

You cannot make your occupation legal right now but mehh…

You will infact get into trouble if you don’t attend school.
I am unsure about the details for tax registration for under 17 self-employed, but can look it up after the Xmas holidays if you can wait that far.
Or, ring HMRC and give them a hypothetical scenario.

this site may be better, lol, next hit down on Google

You do have to pay tax on earnings over a certain amount of income though – eg. child actors pay tax at 40%+

Oh, thanks! Hopefully I won’t have to pay tax, even when paypal deducts their ‘percentage’ from the money I earn I feel sad, lol
I’m still attending school and i’m doing quite well so far compared to the other guys in my school (i live in one of those ‘gangster’ type places in east london) so that shouldn’t be a problem if they try and put something on my parents about my work having a higher priority than my study…
I might ring up HMRC if I start worrying about it too much

If there is no papertrail (ie you get paid cash) then f*ck HMRC, don’t start declaring until you get issued your NI Number at school.
Just keep it to yourself, don’t even tell your mates. There is always a grass…
Answer #5
Child actors only pay that if they are earning above the threshold. Ascertain the threshold for single males, and if your income for the tax year is below that, then liability has not occurred. No liability, no trouble.

My Thoughts exactly.

A single male under 65 yrs has a tax threshold currently about £143 per week (paying no NI) (£7,475)
Answer #8
Your Personal tax allowance should cover you and your conscience. £7,475 for 2011-2012.
People notice changes, so don’t make too much too soon and no one will be the wiser.

You cannot start this employment w/o a degree. This is an one way situation really. Take the money, keep a low profile. Deny everything if ever cornered.
