How to get good seats at live events?

So I’ve always wondered how people get good seats at music/comedy/sporting events. Is it a “Who you know” kind of thing or just down to being the first in the queue to buy the ticket?
I’m from the UK and whenever I use sites such as Ticketmaster or See Tickets I generally get offered awful seats right at the back – No matter how early I am when it comes to purchasing them.
Is there a trick to getting good tickets or is it all down to luck? Or is there some other form of trickery preventing people from actually purchasing the better seats so they can be sold for a higher price?!

It depends I guess, certain events have different price categories.
I would’ve thought it’s who you know kinda thing….if not that then its definitely the price you pay for the seats
