How to play the games i have downloaded for nintendo 3ds

My little nephew and niece have gotten themselves a nice pair of Nintendo 3DS this christmas, and then I thought i would help them with some games.
So i humbly come to you for directions!
I download the games wanted/needed, and then what? I don’t know too much about the nintendoes, other than it has a slot for (micro?)SD cards..
Could it be possible that it’s as simple as putting the game on the sd card and then open the file through the nintendo?

You will need a flash cart and a Micro SD card.
You cannot download and play 3DS games, there is no way yet. Some cards will work on the 3DS but will only play DS games

Ok I have downloaded the games now why I need a flash card and SD card at the same time ..Plz help me and what is firmware and how do i know which firmware is good for the DS
