data storage and backup

August 4th, 2016

Not sure which would be better for my purposes.
I have an I54440, 8 gb ram with one 120gb ssd for OS, I am purchasing 3 WD3tb reds.
I want to use one disk for backup of 3 laptops.
The other two I want for storage and streaming with the ability to stream when out of the house.
Not sure if windows home server is overkill or if freenas will do what I want.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Don’t get red drives AKA the poor mans SAS drives, Those are for people desperately limited by synology or qnap trashcans trying to make RAID 5 work.

Get a HP P400 for 20$ online making sure it includes 512MB and the battery. Connect the drives with 2 SAS > SATA fanout cables to bog standard 3tb drives and use RAID 6.

Afterwards pat yourself on the back you’ve just pwned a 1500$ consumer/small business NAS for 20$

They were used in loads of hp’s enterprise servers for years so eBay is swamped with them, They own a consumer nas\raid controller because they support RAID 6 with up to 8 drives. Their only downside is its only 1.5gbps sata so keep the ssd plugged into the mobo
