Best method to host media streaming from home
January 29th, 2020
(Trying a server right now, possibly plex. but unsure for now)
What speed internet do you have?
I should imagine it would be easy to get caught out if you were streaming copyright material yourself..
The streaming would be for personal use and close friends. 15 MBps down 5 up. for now. Hoping for an upgrade on it soon. Should push 50 MBps down and 10 up..
It won’t be the speed that kills you – it will be the bandwidth used.
I don’t know if your plan has a limit, but if it does, streaming out movies will chew your through your bandwidth allocation in a hurry. If it doesn’t have a stated limit, your speed probably gets capped at some point.
Easiest way is to get a NAS or Router that has a built-in media server. You can get models with external USB ports. They are fast and easy to setup, and most now give you a web address you can use to sign into the server, avoiding the dynamic IP address issue with almost all home connections.
I don’t have that functionality on my current router. Don’t got the money to get a new one. Thanks for the info though. Also I got 250 GB per month.

Something like this will suffice at much more competitive prices than Nas.. just an example product, you can find exactly what you like at the same price range or maybe even cheaper (the only good thing that ever came from hp lol). Or you could just dedicate an older PC for the job which is free.
What would you use to set up a multi-platform media streaming center from home
I think you missed out an important part – I have no budget for additional equipment!
So the question now boils down to: what media server software can I use to stream content over the net to a limited group of people using my home connection (?)
My favourite is Serviio

Simple and easy to setup and I haven’t ever had an issue with transcoding any type of file thrown at it.
Thanks so much man! Much appreciated
