PS3 HDMI + Stereo Receiver

August 3rd, 2013

So. We recently got a Playstation 3, the other day. It’s working fine, perfectly, and with the new HDMI cable that’s been purchased, the picture quality is superb, unbelievable. Just, strangely, now that the PS3 is plugged into the HDTV with an HDMI cable, the ancient Pioneer Stereo Receiver we have is now giving us TV audio… as well as the PS3 audio. Messing with the settings in the PS3 has done nothing, nor with the TV itself, which options are severely limited; pretty much merely to giving it extra bass and balance and whatnot.
The Receiver is plugged into the TV, the PS3 is plugged into the TV via the red, yellow and white cables, and there’s the HDMI cable plugged into the PS3 and the TV.
What’s going on? Previously, the audio was fine. Now, as soon as the HDMI cable was plugged in, we’ve got us TV audio. It’s no good listening to… Neighbours, or whatever is on at the time, while playing inFamous.

Answer #1
Unplug the RCA cables from the tv, when playing the PS3. Only need the HDMI cable for sound and picture using one source of cable?
Answer #2
Mkay, did that, we’re still getting TV sound through both of the speakers/stacks/things (which, I probably should have mentioned, oops). PS3 sound still, just through the TV speakers.
Answer #3
On the tv menu settings in sound, look for the option for external speakers instead of the stereo speakers. Enable it. I don’t know what stacks are. All your external devices PS3, TV, etc need to be running through the receiver. Hint the name receiver, double check your connections and settings. All i could think of, i’m sure someone could give you more information than I.
Answer #4
Bleh, we’ve got Sound Mode: User, Treble, Bass, Balance, Auto Volume and Surround Sound in the options menu. Thorough, huh? By stacks, I have no idea either. Speakers. Okay, so everything need to be plugged to receiver, then to TV, okay. Right now, it’s PS3 to TV, TV to receiver. It’s an ancient Pioneer thing, so it doesn’t have HDMI. Thanks for all your help so far, though!
Answer #5
What’s the make and model of your receiver, speakers and tv?
Did you go into surround sound and see if there was an option for external
devices/sound devices?
Yes every source of sound needs to be received through the receiver, thus outputting the sounds it’s receiving to the external speakers. Sure your speakers wires aren’t dead or loose?
Maybe it’s on the receivers end, you didn’t mention that you tried troubleshooting that devices settings.
Answer #6
Pioneer SX-255R – http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Home/AV-Receivers/Pioneer+Receivers/SX-255R
Onkyo S5000 speakers, which appear to be… uh… vintage.
Rank Arena SV-32H1FHD1 – Which is the TV.
The Surround Sound setting is offering basically Yes, and No. Sigh.
Also, thinking about the amplifier problem now, of plugging everything into it.
Answer #7
Well the amplifier can only amplify the sound it’s receiving from the receiver/source of sound. But then again if all else fails, maybe try geek squad. Unless a member on here could direct you to some information. Or better yet post this on a car audio forum, they are usually audiophiles with tons of great information…Worth a shot.
Answer #8
I’ll do something like that, when I can work up the energy to. Ugh, am I lazy. Anyway, thanks for the help and all!
Answer #9
The sound of the PS3 goes at the TV via HDMI. To send it to the receiver, it (the receiver) must have 2 things: a) digital coaxial audio input and b) the option to enable it, instead of the TV sound. then you need this:

And you are good to go.
Answer #10
Check carefully each of the input connections to your pioneer receiver..
Make sure you haven’t got something connected to a line output by mistake as that could cause your crosstalk..
How is sound connected from TV to Receiver…With a pair of RCA plugs ?
Pull out the RCA connection from PS3 to receiver..Do you still get both sounds together when you choose to listen to the TV, and have PS3 running.?
Answer #11
Well! We’ve decided on a… solution. PS3 RCA cables to amplifier, and we’re getting stereo sound from the speakers. Happy with it, don’t want to stuff around any more, and we don’t really use the TV for actual TV anyway.
