If your computer came with XP, you do NOT want to install Vista on it. Vista is terrible, and a resource hog.
If you want a newer version of Windows, get Windows 7, it runs better than Vista on systems with limited resources.
Also, you could try something like Tiny7.
Step by Step Guide to Installing Windows Vista:
1. Do not install Windows Vista.

Ok so 7 should run ok with dual core and 3gb ram ?
How do I go about installing it ?
Answer #3
You install Windows 7 just like you install any windows..
Burn to DVD..
Set your bios to boot from DVD first..
Boot with Windows 7 install DVD..
Follow the simple on screen instructions..
Mind you..upgrading over XP is not a good idea..Backup your important data and do a fresh in stall..

If you only have one puter, it might be best to download all the drivers you will need before doing the format (onto a usb flash drive or something similar), whilst having a working internet connection
I use XP Pro and several linux distros on my main desktops and probably won’t bother going to Win 7.
My laptops/netbooks on the other hand have a mish-mash of Vista/Debian, and Win7/Ubuntu.
Vista is a resource hog especially for the Aero interface (which you don’t need to use btw)

agree to all ppl here, Windows 7 are better than vista, the installation quite easy just burn the .iso image to DVD and boot it through BIOS… delete C partition > make it again > format it then install

this too very important especially the MoBo driver because ur computer might not connect to internet before u install the driver (in my case)…
