Winrar extracting files from archives inside archives

January 22nd, 2024

Maybe Im missing something here it anoys the hell out of me trying to extract archives inside archives inside archives , is there an easy way to extract the files that are many layers deep , like a movie thats in rar files inside zip files inside rar files , how do I just extract the bottom layer files in one go ?
Answer #1
Use a download manager. like JDownloader2, you can set it to extract after download, it will extract everything, you can also set it to delete rar files after extraction.

Thanks but can Winrar do it ?
Answer #3
Not that I know. I just extract all parts manually as they come out.
Answer #4
Using Winrar, it cant do it… But given the fact its freeware so to speak, only takes a minute of your time after downloading to extract, delete, extract delete, and get to play or install… 13 years ago used to take like 5 hours to install a ripped game after spending 3 days downloading.. (SHAKES FISTS!!!)
Answer #5
if you mean archives like original scene release games where you need to extract for a few times. you probably need a special script for doing it. jdownloader can unrar for once what it has downloaded like says but it does it for once and if you have rar inside the rar , it wont extract the second rar by default , am i right ? i didnt personally tested it but it should be like that. there is also a pa on jdownloader where you can enter commands about rar , maybe with specific commands you can do series of unpacking.
if you asked for a way directly dragging out the file at the bottom of the archives , there is no way to do it , at least i dont know any. it needs to be unpacked in order and only thing you can do , is to let another software does it for you but i wouldnt rely on those things.
besides you have hell of a system , rars shouldnt bother you how is the gaming going ? you are experiencing the world in a different way with g-sync ?

On Windows winrar/JD2 would unrar right to the end product (never got left with a rar file), now using Linux and have to finish un-rarring manually (however that´s with Peazip), fortunately its not too often. This maybe just a settings issue, will have a tinker next time I download something.
Answer #7
it does unrar but can it do it in series for 5 times for example until the real file comes out such a .mkv movie file ? ofc i just made up this , no one archives a movie for 5 times unless he is crazy
Answer #8
Havnt seen it done… Possible once I would think, (the first layer) cant be bothered researching and just looked through the general settings and cant see options to get close to it (in IDM)… Show us further …??
I cant even see where an option to extract once is let alone multi layers..
Answer #9
Can’t say Ive had it with a movie… but sometimes with Apps or games..
Still, that can prevent your anti virus from wiping out the whole thing should it detect a false positive!
Answer #10
you can´t compare settings in IDM to those in JD2, JD2 gives options on where to extract to, whether to create subfolders etc and also to delete archive files after extraction ( I have a feeling this is the setting that makes it keep extracting other layers until it reaches a point where it can delete the archive files).
Answer #11
You edited lol……….. firstly your first post said JD2 or IDM…. (Shakes Fists!!!)
Answer #12
WTF are you on about? I´ve never used IDM so wouldn´t mention it.
Here´s an edit, LOOK at the post immediately after my post where the guy quoted my post.
Answer #13
Maybe your right, the topic header states how to do it with IDM…
Still dont know how, or if you can with JD2 due to no explanation…. The origional poster may be illiterate?? Ever think about that??

Hmmm! having read your post (good word ´origional´) you may be right
Answer #15

I had this the other day with this file download from the music section here : 9491--Van Morris0n - The sstia n Mr015) (320).rar I just dealt with it. Happens every so often. A couple 7zips doesn’t really hurt, just don’t change destination folder until you get the result. Put it elsewhere then delete original destination. kudos to
Answer #17
cant you just double click on file to open winrar window then keep clicking on file in the window till you get to the file you want then just drag to where you want that way only one extraction

Yeah, that’s what i thought. I’ve done it before many times with WinRar. Usually the only files now-a-days that are double archived, or more, are movie and TV shows from usenet. And they always turn out to be bogus/virus files. The ones that ask you to go to a website to get the password to the second archive.
I learned a long time ago to just download the first Rar file in the archive, scan it, then open it. If i see another archive inside i just look for another upload and delete the one i had just downloaded.
But yeah, if i’m understanding the OP correctly, WinRar will do the job just fine.
OP – Better not to have anything set to extract your archives automatically. Best practice is to always scan the archive for viruses before you open it.

Thanks guys I will try that in Winrar next time , like today I downloaded Easy Sketch from here and it was a single Rar file , inside it were something like 25 zip files , each zip file had a single rar file in it , then the .rar file from the last archive extracted the setup nfo and crk , the whole thing could have been inside the original rar file with one extraction .
Answer #20
what you said is related to scene release style , i also sometimes encounter similar .zips especially on small game groups. i dont know but there is probably a method for it for single extraction , most possibly with 7-zip. major big game scene groups release in small .rar files where you can extract the .iso out of it with single step.

if you highlight all the zip files and then extract here it will extract them all in one go and you end up with all the rar files then just click on the first one and extract
