August 5th, 2016

hey guys, my kids have been downloading stuff, when im at work, and i want to let them use the computer, but to password downloading, can i set this up through firefox? or do i need to put an add on to filter this?
Answer #1
Yes U needs to make a Filter… Words Phrases etc:
But I think U needs to do a bit more research when Kids are involved.

PS: U could also Close (turn off) some services… ( but thats being nasty) lol
And if U want PANDA TOTAL SECUIRTY… (which I use No problemo)
Great Parenting Options.

You would need to use a 3rd party app for this task, These two are pretty good:

But I don’t get why you’d wanna do this. What’s the biggie about your kids downloading
stuff while your not there? What are you afraid of?

my kids already managed to get the smart hdd malware on it once before.. took me days to repair the damage lol.

Smart HDD malware?!? Sounds to me like you don’t know what your talking about.
SMART is a hardware monitoring system built into HDDs which is made to predict failures, You can read
more about it here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.M.A.R.T.
Malware got nothing to do with it. Maybe you owe your kids an apology!

Sounds to me like YOU don’t know what you are talking about – it sounds like S.M.A.R.T HDD 2012 Rogue Malware by Britec http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRwDGsNdf6k
– it’s pointless doing anything with Firefox as they can simply use Internet Explorer or any other browser. The apps posted earlier in the thread are the type of app you need, there are many of them, I’ve never used them so can’t recommend.

Let’s say it was malware, What makes you think it’d make any difference if they won’t be able to download stuff while your not there? I’m just pointing out the obvious, They can run an infected file even if your there and they won’t even realize it (While some anti-viruses are better than others, None of em is 100% effective) so a file can appear to be clean while it’s in fact isn’t! There are better options to prevent this from happening, Let me point out a few:
1. Switch their OS to Linux, There are plenty of different distro’s to choose from, It’s fairly easy to adapt, And most importantly – It’s virus/malware proof as windows ones can’t run on it!
It’ll be much harder for them to mess it up than Windows, It does have it’s cons however.
Linux is not made for gaming obviously.
2. Use an anti-changes software (such as deepfreeze) this will revert all changes after shutdown/reboot.
You can just protect the C partition (OS) to keep it in good shape, And have em save their private data on a secondary partition. 3. Use a group policy settings to allow only certain applications to run (Google it for further info)
this can prevent em from installing any new apps and by doing so, Reduce the risk.
It does have a con tho, It’s not gonna be path\exe based, But only file name based.
So for example, If you allow notepad, And they rename an app to notepad.exe, It’d be allowed!
4. Teach em how to take proper precautions so this won’t happen again. Such as:
A) Using Firefox Instead of Internet Explorer, It has far less security holes and is updated more frequently. Also, Use adblock plus (addon) to block ads (some of em can be malicious)
B) When downloading an application/game from a forum topic, Download only from those who have a high number of replies, Made by a VIP/Donator, Or by a member who has a high post count. Neither of this guarantees the file will be virus-free, But it does improve the odds!
C) Not to open any file received by E-Mail/IM (Unless they specifically requested it from the person)
5. Change Antivirus/Firewall to better ones, What are they currently using?
Set all that aside, Keeping backup is important and should never be underestimated!
Sounds to me like YOU don't know what you are talking about
That rarely happens, But you may have a point on this one. However, Neither of us knows for sure
what he was referring to, So it can go either way

The best option is to use Malwarebytes and a decent antivirus app (corporate versions are usually the best option) both with realtime protection, and both set to download and install definitions as often as possible.
Backing up your OS drive with something like Acronis True Image to another drive is a good option – then if it does happen to get infected a format and re-install of the image is very simple to do.
Not sure how old ‘s kids are, but if they are young, I would be more worried about them downloading or even watching porn when not around. I didn’t let my kids use a computer unsupervised until they were about 14/15.

my kids are aged from 3 to 11 – got 5 of them – i use kerpaskey , and malware bytes , i hadnt heard of acronis, may give that a go- as i said no problem them using it, u just dont need repeats of the smart hdd marlware, i luckily managed to get rid of it, from restore point then running 4 different programs to remove all parts of it, but it took ages. my eldest daughter has started getting requests for friendships on game forums, and you tube, it may be harmless, but who really knows theres a lot of creeps and sickos out there, i just wanna protect my kids and not get malware installed by them not knowing what they are doing when im around, thus the reason for trying to see if there is a download password protection that can be used in firefox ..

i use kerpaskey.
Antivir (AV)+Comodo (FW) would be better. Have a look here:
http://www.matousec.com/projects/proactive-security-challenge-64/results.php
http://www.av-comparatives.org/images/docs/avc_fdt_201209_en.pdf

Both are 100% free. Antivir has a nag screen after each update, But it can be disabled:
http://www.elitekiller.com/files/disable_antivir_nag.htm
Set security software aside, You might find steps 2/3/4 above very handy as well.

True, But at the end of day, You can’t keep an eye on her 24/7, So you should teach her how to be safe! As in explain to her that there are dangerous ppl online and they aren’t always who they claim to be, Tell her not to give her phone/contact information to anyone and that she should never attempt to meet an online person in real life (not without one of the parents present at least) and of course, Tell her to tell you straight away if someone tells her something that makes her feel uncomfortable or say something like “it’d be our little secret” if you do this, Then you wouldn’t need to worry too much. You could do the same with your other kids.
