Sorry I am a computer noob but what is this SHA1 or hash? I seen people talk about it on thepiratebay, some other sites, and even this site.

It’s a way of identifying a file and checking if it’s genuine
Edit:
In other words a file is given a unique number code to identify it as genuine.

Do you have to download a file to find out? Where does the real sha1 or hash come from and what how do you prove if the thing is legit, I don’t get it.
Answer #3
Basically they are used as a checksum..
If you get the same Hash/Sha as what the uploader got, when he read the hash, then your file should be good and not modified or corrupted..
Here are some utilities you can use to read the hash..

There is a bit of an explain there on how it works too…And for more..You can Google!

Can’t you mod the hash or sha to make it look like it’s legit or does it work automatically?

I don’t know anything about it really, but i’m sure any changes made to file in anyway, changes checksum. I’m sure they’ve tried to see if they can fake them, but probably haven’t worked out how. As you can be sure, if can be faked, they’ll do it.

I post this in all my game topics if this gives you an idea of hash values
4. MD5 Hash Value - HashTab provides an easy way to verify file integrity and authenticity.
To check your download with the original uploaded file, compare the MD5 Hash Value. google HashTab v4.0.0 Setup.zip or download here: http://implbits.com/HashTab.aspx
-Small file. Add to your system. How it works: 1- after install, right click properties of the file. 2- go to Hash Tab/File Hashes tab 3- program generates a unique number (MD5) to identify a specific file. -if your number does not match mine, that would be the problem file. You
would need to re-download the file again and that usually fixes the problem.
-This is quite simple to do and we can identity the specific problem file.

Hash values are a way of seeing if a certain file is 100% the same as another file.
Going back a few years when Rapidshare was the most popular filehost, they started to block files with particular HASH’s…. (Known files)… So therefore people would simply just add ONE BYTE to a file, and that would change the HASH of the file. So then they were able to re-upload it without any problems.

Can't you mod the hash or sha to make it look like it's legit or does it work automatically?

There’d be no point, for two reasons.
A – you upload a file and you post the hash value so that someone can check it’s downloaded error free or someone else hasn’t stuck a virus in it – IF your hash value has been edited it won’t match the one they make from their downloaded file. They’ll think it’s a bad file and go elsewhere to get it.
B – when you upload a file to a host, you don’t provide the hash, they make it automagically from the upload – so you have nothing to change there.
This also why you add a small text file to a banned upload – it changes the auto-made hash value.
