Vista Wont Recognise Any Usb Devices On My laptop.

The problem only started after i bought a memorex ultra external hard drive it was ok fora week but kept getting the pop up needs to install drivers..but it still worked then last week it stopped altogether..now it wont recognise anything i have searched forums including microsoft and to no avail..how the hell do i sort this..my mates laptop recognises my external no problem and he has vista too..someone out there must have a sloution to this..thanks in advance
