motherboard?
Have you updated XP to SP2?
If you have, go into ‘Device Manager’ and look for USB devices with a ‘?’ (question mark) next to them. Right-click and select ‘update drivers’, choose find drivers automatically. It should then find/install them. You may have to reboot.
Thanks for the reply.

It is XP2 and I had done all critical updates and the problem there before and after updates. Yes I found yello quston mark in device manager as “Un known device” When I connect both of my portable hard disc and usb stick the unknown devices will be 2 and in Disc drives I could see 3 devices but not in yello that one is my HD and two are the usb stick and portable hard disc. Whe I remove any one of this it will become grey in Disc drives. But the Other devices with yello qustion mark still there. If I right click and un install it will go but when I connect any usb device it will appear again. Yes I tried to install the driver through the wizard but it couldn’t find the driver.
The new portable hard disc was not working with my laptop and was asking for install software or some thng. The I insert the driver disc for 98 that came with the portablr hard disc case it worked. I heard that for XP there is no need to install any driver for this type devices and xp will detect and will install it automatically. In my case that is not happeningh. All other things are working well. I have the Recovery disc and if I use that again I have to face 100s of acer craps and that will take almost 45% of processing power even with out openng any program. And if I use Neuview player with MKV the system will crash. But now it all working well and only using maximum 40% for the neuview player that paly MKV files.
So any idea about what happening and how to solve it?
Sorry, I’m not really sure what to do. Most manufacturers don’t provide USB drivers as they’re now a part of XP SP2.
Have you installed the chipset drivers that came with you PC/Motherboard?
If you only have a ‘recovery’ disc, then it can be hard. Download CPU-Z:

It will tell you the make and model of your motherboard. Go to their website and download/install the chipset drivers for your make/model. Hopefully after you reboot the USB devices will be detected.
Maybe format and do a clean install?
Thanks for all I will try it and if not succeed then should use recovery. What I hate is acer used fat32 fro OS and other 2 partition with NTFS and that makes much fragmentation in C so I was thinking to change the fat 32 to ntfs with partition magic. whatever I will try to get driver first. Thnks again
