Upgrading a laptop

May 16th, 2018

Probably a stupid question, but is it possible to upgrade the RAM or CPU in a laptop?
Answer #1
you can add more RAM I don’t believe the CPU is replaceable
Answer #2
Depends on the laptop, ram is normally easily do able on most (but not all). CPU varies, can be done quite often but it’s no designed to be done, will kill the warranty, can risk breaking your laptop as you have to dismantle it all, that been said, I’ve done it on one, probably wouldn’t bother again though.
Rams normally so easy it can be worth it.
Answer #3
Is there much benefit in upgrading the RAM with the same CPU?
Answer #4
The benefits depend on how much you have now.
Answer #5
you definitely can but you have to know if your laptop support more RAM. Google your laptop model and it will tell you how many ram it can support
you might see improvement but it really depends on how many gigabytes you upgrading to. You might not see much improvement if you’re going from a 2 gigabyte to a 4 gigabyte for example. it also depends on how old your laptop is. It’s not going to speed things up fast if you have like a old laptop
Answer #6
Moved from Off-Topic to Helpdesk.
Answer #7
I’ve got an ASUS K53S which has 8 GB of RAM, can’t really find anywhere that says how much it can be upgraded to though :/
Answer #8
You just didnt search hard enough.
It took me like 15 second really..
From Asus themself.
Memory
DDR3 1333 MHz SDRAM, 2 x SO-DIMM socket for expansion up to 8 G SDRAM

Mean 8GB is the farthest you can upgrade it to.

My bad, thanks haha. That really sucks. So if I wanted better performance I’d pretty much need to buy a new one?
Answer #10
I doubt you will be able to upgrade the cpu. There are an selected few that can but then again its an meh.
So ya your will need to or build an pc. Or you can format it. Dont install much on it. Only thing you will need to use on an daily base.
Answer #11
i7-2960XM & GeForce GTX 680MX & patience.
Answer #12
What is your laptop? Because 8GB sure sounds powerful.
Answer #13
sell it and buy a desktop PC
Answer #14
Would need to know the exact specs of your laptop’s CPU, chipset, HDD, etc.. But, from what I can tell by searching, most of the K53S series have a plenty powerful enough CPU. I kinda doubt the CPU would be slowing down your computer (if that’s your reason for wanting to upgrade).
Again, from general searching, the major bottleneck on these laptops would be the 5400rpm HDD that most get shipped with. I would say your best option would be to replace your Hard Disk Drive with a Solid State Drive (SSD). It would probably be cheaper than a CPU replacement and you already have the max amount of RAM. A new SSD would speed up your laptop’s overall performance considerably and is a easy replacement. Would just need to do a complete reinstall of the OS and drivers.
Answer #15
The main thing I guess is I use it for gaming and a lot of the new games coming out I doubt will be able to run on it. I’m currently playing Assassin’s Creed III (on the lowest settings) and still have some frame rate issues. Replacing the HDD makes sense though. I can get you the specs if you want?
Answer #16
Considering you are on a laptop, 8gbs is more than plentiful, and any gains (if it was possible) would be negligible Getting a SSD will also barely improve framerates So I would advise you to save up to purchase a new laptop/desktop instead
Answer #17
if you’re on a budget then it’s not a good idea to purchase a laptop for gaming.
Answer #18
Depends on the whole configuration and the model of your laptop.
sometimes the laptop works sluggishly cause the cooling isnt efficient or it is used in a hot place. So however you increase the RAM and the cooling problem persists, its going to be useless.
IMHO, dont increase your RAM or upgrade your CPU. Get a new laptop if you can instead.
