Upgrade Advice
September 21st, 2013
Because of all the new games that are out, and those coming out I have been looking at possibly upgrading my PC, but I need some advice. My PC is about 3 years old. Here are the specs:
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4600+ 2.4ghz
Graphics: XFX GeForce 8600 GTS 730mhz, 256Mb
Memory: 2gb DDR2 memory
Mobo: GigaByte Model GA-MA69GM-S2H

PSU: 550W
So my questions are:
Does my current build justify an upgrade? (I think so, but want to hear what others have to say)
What needs upgrading? Everything? Somethings? I think my mobo is the greatest bottleneck.
I also welcome any suggestions on things I could upgrade to. I am a moderate gamer so I would like tech that would allow me to play with decent fps on the latest games (BF3, MW3, Swtor, and ACR to name a few). I have a reasonable budget, but hardware with the best price/performance would be best (for example, a graphic card around $100-$150 is reasonable for me).
Let me know if you need any additional information.
Thank you very much
It’s not worth upgrading that. Invest in a new rig.
Pretty much everything has to go and I was thinking something like this:
ASRock 970 EXTREME3 AM3+ AMD 970 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX
$84.99
PowerColor AX6870 1GBD5-2DH Radeon HD 6870
$159.99
G.SKILL Sniper Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900)
$69.99
AMD FX-4100
$119.99

Subtotal: $434.96
You might be able to see better builds for that price.
Thanks for the input. I was leaning towards a new rig as well. 3 years seems ripe age to retire what I have.
So I was looking at hardware and seeing where I can save. For my current computer, I have an antec solo as a case, and a rosewell 550W power supply. I was thinking I can pass these on to a new rig. What do you think?
Some of items I was looking at are:
Intel i5-2500K 3.3Ghz
4gb of ram
ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3 LGA 1155 Intel Z68 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard (Has PCIe 3.0 and can support ivy bridge)
60gb SSD dedicated for OS.
The video card Dragon Core listed looks good.
If I were to build this, would a 550W psu cut it?
The build looks alright, you just need to be specific on which SSD your going to use.
best bet is stating how much you want to spend.
im sure somebody will show you the best hardware for your budget.

Whoops guess I should include that.
