star wars kotor 1 & 2

August 5th, 2016

downloaded from installed and can’t even get it to load it just crashes right away “sorry for the inconvenience star wars kotor has encountered an error & needs to close”
what gets to me about this is the fact my radeo 9500,9700 chipset is compatible
my 3ghz single core processor is recommended. yet….it crashes,
i have tried changing the INI file, NO LUCK
tried patching it..NO LUCK
tried EVERYTHING I CAN FIND ON GOOGLE even replacing the dll file.
I was thinking maybe i need to roll back my drivers to an old date, and install an old catalyst control center, however,
part of me feels like this shouldn’t be happening on a computer that was made 1 year after kotor came out.
so WTF!!! no i won’t post up the analyst from the game due to the fact I have 5 times, and it’s telling everybody the same thing.
EVERYTHING IS FINE. so why is the game still crashing RIGHT WHEN I DOUBLE CLICK IT
DOUBLE CLICK IT, goes black, BLINKS, then the black screen blinks and the error follows

Windows 7?
KOTOR is know for issues with W7 – there are forums full of complaints and tips.
Find the swkotor.exe file – right click it and open up Properties
Set it to run in compatibility mode for Windows XP SP2
Also check the box to run as an administrator
Save the changes, right click swkotor.exe, create a shortcut and throw it down on your desktop
Double click the shortcut; remember to blink

And
The following fixes got the game to work on my Windows 7 Professional 64-bit laptop with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5450 graphics card. (ATI is sometimes said to cause problems with this game)
First, disable In-Game Steam Overlay for KoToR. This can be done by heading to your Steam Library and right clicking KoToR and selecting Properties.
Second, navigate in Windows Explorer program files or program files 86 (this depends if you're running 32-bit or 64-bit windows) > steam > steamapps > common > swkotor > and then run swconfig.exe which should be found in the swkotor folder.
Third, after this applet is up, uncheck the "Use Hardware Mouse" and check the "Disable Movies" (this just disables the intro movies, to my knowledge).
Also, if you're still having problems I've heard some people suggest running it in windowed mode.

man i wish i had windows 7, i am using an old computer running windows xp??? with a radeon 9500/9700 graphics card? 3ghz single core?
I have done so many checks to see if something on my computer is incompatible? yet nothing is? should i try downloading the game from a different source and installing it? or should i should give up on playing it?
what’s weird is i’ve seen this game played on this exact same model of computer multiple times? and to add to that strangness both KOTOR 1 & 2 do the EXACT SAME THING when i start them up *black screen, blinks, then error pops up* to me that sounds graphics or install related???

That’s odd – it should run on XP sweetly.
You might be missing some needed MS C++ parts – visual c++ runtimes.
KOTOR aren’t challenging games; cpu or gpu challenging, I mean..

Yeah agree i guess that’s why I am letting it get to me so bad because this computer at one point was PRIMED for KOTOR, I am going to try and Re install anything C++ related in my add remove programs and add remove services. maybe you are right and I am just missing some key visual components for the game to start up properly.

I just started up both of my copies. Both work just fine. I remember having a similar problem but sadly I don’t remember how I solved it. I just remember googling for a bit. I think I downloaded a different copy of Kotor 1 when I kept having problems with the first. I guess you can try that if you haven’t. Sorry I’m not more help.

alright so i just tried to install the game from a second downloaded source(file planet i believe is where i obtained a copy) and upon the first install, I go to run the game and get a different error “game wasn’t installed properly reinstall it or repair it” now i am uninstalling it and reinstalling, if i get the same error. i am going to try to check if their is a repair option in the uninstall menu, and if not, then I am going to try to download it from one more source, if that last source doesn’t work, I am going to try and reinstall all my c++ software! WISH ME LUCK hah:) thanks for the idea . I’ll post an update sometime friday:)
quick update:
downloaded second version, went well till it asked for activation? uninstalled it, reinstalled a 3rd source, now a new error is occuring which
I think has something to do with my video card drivers, or the opengl problem(that the analysis gives me) although i have read on google
people still play with that opengl problem. i start the game, a little window comes up witha picture of a ship, loads loads, sometimes a box comes up with a bunch of wingdings for letters,
whether that box comes up or not though the same thing happens, that picture of the ship loads loads then disappears, and nothing comes up?
driver or gl related, but if anybody else has any ideas would love to hear them!
swear why is this game giving me so much trouble i just want to blaze and play some KOTOR!!! haha.

good news! after that FAB error came up I googled it, idk what was going on with that original error of not loading at all could have been out dated drivers but for the record
my drivers were up to date, so possibly could have just been the reinstall of the game from a different source(downloaded 3 different times from 3 different places) however
I found installing a NO CD CRACK worked great for fixing the FAB(box comes up with random squares and letters) error for now. So hopefully the game plays smooth now because
I FINALLY GOT TO THE MAIN MENU! THANK YOU !
