[Solved]What is System 32\config folder?

June 8th, 2023

So, after breaking my head over and over again for months regarding “missing space from SSD drive”, today I found that this “config” folder is about 22gb and is hidden. So, before messing/deleting, I would like to know what is this folder?
I see lot of BLF, LOG1, LOG2, REGTRANS-MS files along with few system and text documents.
21,836 BLF files – 1.33 GB
22 LOG1 and LOG2 files – 6.19 MB
43,671 REGTRANS-MS files – 21.3 GB Other files and folders – 202 MB
Should I delete these files to save ~20GB? Any help is appreciated,
Thank you.

It’s definitely too big, mine is only 200 mb, and I have none of those files you speak of in there.
mine looks like this

Answer #2
It’s 201 MB as well;

But, after un-checking “hide protected Operating System Files” it’s 22GB

Thanks!

I already had it unchecked

That’s strange – mine is 178Mb and another 7.7mb when I uncheck..
My blf files are about 10 x 512kb each.
From what i gather, they are fail-safe files for any reg changes.
If you reboot, touch nothing for about 5 mins (to make sure windows has opened any late-start services and files).. you should be able to delete tho9se big blf files (as you have changed nothing yet).
Better still would be to move them somewhere else and wait to see if anything failes or falls over.. just in case..

google “BBI windows system file” virus maybe ?

This is due to buggy drivers or a corrupted registry, do you have an nVidia graphics card? I’m not sure if they’ve fixed it yet but one of the nVidia drivers would cause those files to be generated (10+ MB per hour), disabling the nVidia Stereoscopic 3D driver component fixed it. I’m not sure if it’s considered “safe” to delete these files, but I deleted 15GB of *.regtrans-ms files, I just kept the latest file for each driver GUID. Haven’t had any problems, nor any more files generated after disabling the Stereoscopic nVidia driver.

^^Yes, I’ve nVidia GPU and Stereoscopic 3D driver application (?) keeps running in background.
Should I disable it? Delete those regtrans files?
Thank you!

What about REGTRANS-MS files?
Thanks

Weird.
I rarely use any application or anything that might cause infection. Anyways, I’ll scan again thoroughly.

Are you using a 3D monitor or 3D glasses? If not, you can uninstall the 3D Stereoscopic driver, there is no need for it. I never install that part.

I uninstalled 3D Stereoscopic driver and removed REGTRANS-MS files as well.
So far everything is fine. Will let know if I face any issue.
Thanks again, everybody.

Sorry – I cocked it up:
My regtrans files are 512 kb each, 12 of them. and in a TXR folder I have 4 more of 5 Mb each.
My BLF files are 65536 bytes each – 9 of them including 3 in the TXR folder.
– – – So far all the reports I see say the same thing:
Reboot, wait 2 mins or so, delete the files.
IF they are still in use you won’t be able to delete them – the ones you can delete are surplus to needs, old files.
