should i buy a PS3?

August 5th, 2016

Hello all,
So recently a few of my friends have been playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on the PS3 and I have been seriously jealous, and am at the closest point I have ever been to buying a playstation (in the last 10 years anyway!)
My problems are: 1: I dont have any games console’s at all, and use my PC for gaming at the minute, so I don’t know if I really want one.
2: My wife knows virtually nothing about gaming, however she does know about the Wii, and wants me to buy one of those instead.
The Positives are of course, that the PS3 has free online gaming, and some of my friends are using them for that purpose, so I would know some guys on there.
Bottom line,
Is it worth 300 GBP to buy a PS3? (14 day poll running)
Thanks for any advice/help in advance,
edit: should have said that I counted 300 quid as 2x controllers, Call of Duty MW2 and a headset. also, would it be just as good to buy a 2nd hand one or is the slim worth the money?

Answer #1
300GBP? are you buying a gold plated one?
I got my PS3 for 210 with Killzone 2 & Uncharted (including a little bit of discount because I got it from work).
Having all 3 in my house (we have about 5 360s between us)
360
+ Easy to download games for
+ Graphics are a lot crisper than PS3 for shared titles. If you don’t believe me check the Gamespot comparisons.
+ Easy to use
+ Cheap!
– Have to pay for Live (it’s cheap though)
– Full of little racist kiddies
– COD MW2 has quite a lot of game breaking problems from time to time
PS3
+ Lots of functions, built in browser, wireless, etc
+ Good media player (Blu-ray, Wireless streaming)
+ Some decent exclusives like Uncharted 2
+ FINAL FANTASY 7
– Expensive
– None exclusive titles don’t cut it compared to 360
– Quite a lot of screenburn (for me anyway)
– Lots of patches, upgrades, HDD gets used up quickly
– Unhacked (as of yet, is in the process of being done according to the news)
– Slim (newer ones) suck. Avoid.
Wii
+ Easy as hell to hack
+ Some decent games (Mario, OKAMI!!!)
+ “Casual” friendly
– Not HD
– Most games are pretty poor to be fair
– Mostly used to play pirated GC/N64/NES games
So yeah, I prefer my 360 over all else. PS3 is starting to come into its own game wise. It has FF7 and soon 8 on the PSN for a small price. It’s also good for watching downloaded stuff on your TV (we stream it wirelessly througha NAS but can be done with laptops too) and the Wii is meh.
Answer #2
If you want gaming then stick with the PC, easy to upgrade, free to customize, more convenient for every task and you can easily build an entry-level gaming system for under 300 quid and then build it up whenever necessary.
PS3’s are excellent consoles and if you have a good full HD 1080p TV you will start to notice why you paid so much for it, alot of the games are great and playing online is a massive bonus and has endless hours of fun waiting online.
If your wife is wanting the Wii and your not bothered about either PS3 or PC then you might as well get the Wii, there are quite a few good games on that console and far more interactive then any other console out on the current market. Games are pretty cheap too, customizing the Wii is considerably good value and worth every penny.
It’s a toss up, for 300 you won’t get what you get inside the PS3 when it comes to chosing a PC for that budget bracket, and the Wii is interactive, fun and addictive yet the games aren’t the same as your typical console like the PS3 or XBox.
Answer #3
Just to add to above. If you’re not bothered, stick with your PC and get a 360 AND Wii for the price of most PS3 bundles.

Wow,
Thanks for the fast replies and advice!

I would buy a PS3 personally…I think it is the best console on the market and is looking more promising than the xbox for the future. You can’t go wrong buying an xbox though…at the end of the day it’s just personal preference. I wouldn’t buy a wii because the PS3 and Xbox will have the same gimmick in the future with better graphics
Answer #6
u should get the ps3 its more expensive than a xbox 360 initially but for the xbox u need to but things like microsoft live, wireless adapter, battery pack, headset (ps3 u can use any Bluetooth headset xbox u need a official one) and then a hard-drive assuming u orginaly buy a core model if u buy a elite it has harddrive and headset i think but it about the same price as a ps3
xbox 360 core =120gbp
+15gbp for battery pack
+15gbp for headset
+35gbp for for 1 year of xbox live
+50gbp for wireless adapter
+98gbp for hard-drive Xbox 360 = 333gbp
Ps3 slim = 250gbp
and the Nintendo wii dosnt even come into this equation
Answer #7
xbox needs a lot of additional stuff. Basically if you can get a ps3 and it comes with a free remote or game or movie, its all good.

lol ok elite is 200 + 50 for wireless and +35 for 1 year of xbox live
it works out at 285gbp still more than a ps3
(also ps3 supports 1080p xbox only goes to 1080i and the xbox has that god awful fan )
Answer #11
Go for the ps3, since your wife knows about wii, she might play the ps3 when its motion controller comes out..
PS3!!

Erm, no. 360 supports full 1080p too. A lot of PS3 games max out at 720i/p anyway so it doesn’t really matter. And 360 fans are fine if you get a Falcon or Jasper chipset. Please stop spreading lies it’s not a good look.
And who the hell wants wireless for online gaming? You can find them for 15 anyway and as far as I’m aware you can use any standard one. Live can be found for about 20 from websites and the Elite lets you create new accounts a few times for a free months Live.

They don’t make you buy anything like Live. They just don’t hike up the price so you have to buy it with them. But then again you’re the same person who claims wireless adapters cost 50 and that the 360 doesn’t support 1080p so what’s the point.

My point is that the ps3 even if it is overpriced (which it isn’t) Sony will make very little after that only on games and a few accessories whereas Microsoft needs a live subscription the price and then all there accessories are extremely overpriced a example of this is there hard drive http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-198-SE&groupid=1657&catid=1660&subcat=1667 160gb harddrive for 35gbp http://www.game.co.uk/Accessories/Xbox-360/Xbox-360-Hard-Drive-120GB/~r331715/the xbox 360 120gb hard drive 97gbp the only difference is that Microsoft add a ~ Lovely ~ plastic case and a cable that converts sata to that Microsoft port so Microsoft make around 60gbp
ok and ur right its only the older models that dont support 1080p i didnt realize that the newer ones do support it and as for the the wireless adapter http://www.game.co.uk/Accessories/Xbox-360/Black-Wireless-N-Network-Adapter/~r344966/ it does cost 50 eur
so stop being a stupid little fanboy i have both a xbox and a ps3 and i would not recommend the xbox to anyone
Answer #21
I would say grab a 360, you don’t really need all the accessories and most of the ones you need come with the console – also if you’re just a casual gamer you wont be needing a 120GB hard drive . I’ve had mine for about 3 years (I hope) and I’ve managed with just 20GB Go me! The only argument I can support for the PS3 is uncharted 2, damn you!

That’s a wireless N adapter. You don’t even need wireless so that’s like me arguing the PS3 needs a gamerchair for convenience.
The 360 comes with a harddrive. You barely need any room as it doesn’t require the 1gb+ files to be installed on it before playing.
And all the old 360s supported 1080p when the SOFTWARE upgrade was released.
You’re just beating at a deadhorse with your fanboy idealisms. Please stop embarassing yourself now.

ok this is getting boring firstly the 1Gb+ most games dont install at all and if they do usually its like 5mb (mgs4 was the most i saw and that was about 2gb i think) anyways so what if every game i play needs 1gb storage because i have a 250gb hard drive which i can upgrade for any 2.5″ sata hard drive so im not funning out of storage any time soon and i dont know what this wireless N is and how it is different to the normal wireless addon for xbox and i dont care because with the ps3 i dont need to think about crap like that ok my bad about the 1080p thing i just dont understand why Microsoft didn’t initially release it with 1080p if the hardware is able to run 1080p then why have a update to make it usable now im going to finish this off by pointing out that the ps3 has Blu-ray the ability to install Ubuntu easily a larger hard-drive a quieter fan also the xbox looks fu*ck ugly and is a rip off a dell computer

It all depends on you, you can go for the Xbox 360 or the PS3. My recommendation is to go for the PS3, if you don’t want to pay extra to play online.

but in reply to OP, if you don’t care and you want to keep your woman happy, Wii and 360 can be picked up for the same price as a PS3. You can play the 360 whenever you want to play the odd game, she can play the Wii whenever she wants to.

~ censored ~ i saw a xbox wireless adapter i dont care what version it is and i never said he needed it i was showing that although a xbox is cheaper he will end up buying crap like that and to the OP i would say get a ps3 if ur friends are on psn its better to be able to game with them and keep in mind that the ps3 and xbox are releasing motion controllers later this year so the wii will very probably be obsolete very soon

Wireless N or 802.11n is the current Wireless connection standard. 300mbps compared to 802.11g which is 54mbps and 108mbps in Super G mode. It relys on your wireless router, if its not n certified, then buying it is pointless.
