Renaming .mkv to .mp4?

I was wondering if i rename a movie which is .mkv (like most are on this site) to .mp4 will I be able to play it on my iDevice, without any additional apps?

You can’t simply just rename a file and make it magically change format,Wouldn’t that be nice lol.
You will have to use one of hundreds of programs to convert it. Or do as the poster above suggests.

ive had a look at a few video converting apps and i must say handbrake seems to be the most quickest and easiest for me.

MKV’s and MP4’s are containers, like envelopes which carry the encoded audio and video (and subtitle, if any) streams, but both containers are distinctly different. Renaming one to the other will not convert the container.
You’ll have to remux the audio, video and subtitle stream in to a new container instead. I’d recommend you give Avidemux a go to remux MKV to MP4.

i want to play mkv. videos on my ps3, but the media server is so choppy. i’m tired of converting everything now, because less folk are posting .avi’s, it seems.

Try using Mkv2Vob.
It just changes containers, to one that is PS3 compatible
It doesn’t have to transcode, so it is fast!

mkv is just a container.. if u really dont like the extension just use mkvmerge GUI, and save it as mp4 shoutd just remux it and write it in mp4 container

just remux to mp4 using yamb.should take 5 sec for every 100mb..thats a estimate for a slow pc like mine..
