Recover files from dead computer

December 12th, 2013

Well my laptop just died. is there anyway i can put my hd into a diff comp and boot of it?
sorry should have said hd instead of it.

Answer #1
Yeah – just get a 2.5 inch to 3.5 inch drive adapter
eg
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0001UZQWG
I have one similar but will hold 2 x 2.5 inch drives.
You may need to use different connectors if one is PATA and the other is SATA, if that’s the case though, you can get cable adapters dirt cheaper.

not if the drive it’s self is what died, but any other problem then you can
and boot of it?
prob not without some type of reinstall or repair of the OS
you can install it into another lappy and boot from a CD/DVD or USB using Herin’s BootCD’s MiniXP and recover the drive

I guess I read his post too fast, plus I am tired, didn’t even see he wanted to boot from it
Cheers for pointing that out edwoodweb, he’ll also need to install the drivers for that specific pc that he’s putting it into.

Just get the harddrive out of it and wack it in another pc!

if laptop has cooked it, and you are really out of options, eg need to replace hdd controller.. there is one last thing you can try that sometimes works.. buy some big cans of compressed air (stuff that is sold for cleaning pcs / keyboards) then setup a mechanism that wont freeze but will pretty much blast hdds chips with liquid gas.. can sometimes buy you enough time to grab necessary files.. am talking last chance salloon here
*edit* ,, I should mebbe elaborate more heh… this is assuming your laptops hdd has died due to heat from an enclosed drive and maybe fans clogged up with dust ?.. basically the hdd controler chips get cooked but generally you can send hdd back to manufacturer and they will send you a refurbished drive. They will replace controller on yours and give to next person that sends back a drive etc etc.. so you really dunno who will end up with your hdd and running some form of undelete hehe.. buying the exact same hdd you can just swap the controller to get the data off if that is the problem.. imho is just best freezing the hdd with gas.. doent really matter which gas you use heh, all are sub 0 when compressed into liquid form and will all freeze cool pretty much the same way liquid nitrogen will.. the air canisters are just pouring liquid co2 onto board hehe.. probably the safest option compressed butane would do similar job but hehe, you might pass out be4 transfer is complete

What exactly happened to your laptop? Maybe it can be fixed.
Back to the main question:
1. Remove the HDD from the laptop,If unsure how to do so,Google for “model service manual”,”model service guide” or “model maintenance guide” and you’ll have detailed instructions.
2. Determine whether it uses the IDE or SATA interface,If unsure how to tell,Just Google the model.
3. Hooking it up,Two ways to go:
A) Just buy a 2.5″ external enclosure for the particular interface then you’d be able to use it as an external and hook it up by USB.
You can get one from any local PC store,Don’t bother ordering it online.
B) If you have a Desktop PC and your feeling tech savvy,You could just hook it up internally,No need to get a 2.5>>3.5 drive bay adapter
if your just gonna transfer the data,Leave it outside the case til you finish then power off & disconnect it (Ideally you’d wanna have the case next to the monitor for this),Of course if you do this,Make sure the boot order is set correctly so it’d boot from the desktop’s actual HDD and not this one.
spookymunky You really should avoid giving advice when you have no idea what your talking about.

Are you saying that it now doesn’t turn on at all? Quite confused by this.
Tried with the battery back in?
If it does turn on,Try each RAM stick standalone,Could be bad RAM.

emails? Firefox/Chrome profiles?
