RAID 5 and Windows 7 with 3TB Drives [Solved]

August 5th, 2016

Hi,
I have a Asus Sabertooth X58 motherboard and have just bought 4 x 3TB hard drives. I have configured the drives as RAID 5 using the on board solution but when I go into Windows 7 it shows as 4 separate drives.
Another problem is that (as far as I can find) X58 boards don’t have UFEI support. If I set the controller to AHCI then the drives are recognised as 3TB (2.7TB) but have no option to configure RAID.
I have found some info relating to a IRST update but will this solve my problem.
If not would a RAID card solve this problem? If so my price range is about 100-150.
Also would I have the same problem under 2008R2?
Thank you.

You can pick up a HP P800 with 2xbattery backup units for under a hundred quid these days, If you can afford it setup a home server with one of these cards and you wont need to replace it regardless of how many drives you have
Answer #2
the problem is more with windows 7 , havent got the sabretooth , but iam guessing that w2k8r2 would do not really better as 2008r2 is not designed for mainstream boards.
Other question, the sabretooth should have an intel raid controller with the Z77 ? If you configure a raid on the intel, I’d guess it would work on W7 , at least it does on my MaximusIV
Answer #3
Mind you. All versions of win7 does no support RAID. What version do you have?
Answer #4
Ultimate x64
Edit:
Intel IRST update has solved the problem.

I know this is marked as solved, but DO NOT use raid5!

Why? I would like to know your thoughts on the matter.
