Problems with high latency

August 6th, 2016

i have recently started playing an online game called Runes Of Magic but im having some big problems with latency…
their servers are located in Germany and i live in England so i don’t see how im getting over 50,000ms latency after about 5- 10 mins of playing. this is also not a constant issue. i started playing around 3 months ago but after about a week it started giving me these 50,000 latency then about 3 weeks later it was back to 47ms latency… it completely baffles me as i called up my ISP (o2) and they said that my local exchange was running perfectly and they went limiting packets or doing any maintenance on my line.
i have run some tracerts and these are all the reports i have been getting while having high latency:

any help would be greatly appreciated.

At the far end, you’re still only getting 40ms pings. The timeouts at the top are probably due to your router not replying to pings, which is a common thing. I’d expect issues if it wouldn’t go any further, but you’re seeing good times across the board after that.
I’d try a different server.

40 ms is actually pretty good! look at mine:

all their servers are located in Germany though so i don't know if a different sever would make a difference..
Huge latencies like you’re getting in-game aren’t a result of the transport (you’re at 40ms there), which means that something’s going wrong in the game or in the server. They likely have some technical issues, which might be limited to a single server, or a group of servers. Regardless, trying a different server is worth a try. Also, trying a completely different server somewhere else in the world will let you rule out or confirm the server/server group that you’re using now.
Answer #5
Ok ill try that now and report back.
Answer #6
sorry for double post. i have tryed on a US server and was getting a base latency of 170ish then it soared to 5kms again after about 5-10 mins
another observation is that my connection goes down to 18mbps and my asus wireless adaptor icon says that im not connected to the internet:

tried another 2 servers one from the German selection and another from European selection and they both gave me same results. i seem to have lower latency longer on the server im currently playing…
Answer #7
I’ve noticed that I generally have a very substantial speed drop when my wireless speed drops too. Try moving your wireless adapter if you’re able to, or see if you can position it closer to the router.
It may be that your adapter is faulty, too. But either way, it seems that your problem lies there.
Answer #8
i have moved my wireless adapter around a bit but as my computer is upstairs and the router is downstairs i don’t have a long enough Ethernet cable to test if the adapter is faulty.
is there any other way of testing if it is faulty or not?
Answer #9
Try a friend’s adapter, perhaps? Or maybe just ask a friend to check if them connecting to the same server also creates a huge lag. It’ll help you rule out whether the issue is at the server or at your end.
Answer #10
sounds like your wifi card isnt playing nice with your router, gets overloaded with packets then drops the conenction and re-sync’s.
try doing an Ethernet connection and see if that makes any difference
Answer #11
ok ill try but my router is located downstairs and we have no phone sockets upstairs and i don’t have a long enough Ethernet cable
EDIT: Are my settings correct?

Answer #12
In the last screen, your 54g mode should be set to Auto or g/b or something similar, if your router supports it. 802.11b is the slower of the two, which would go some way to explaining your slow connection.
Also, for security purposes, if your router and adapter can support it, use WPA not WEP for the encryption.
Answer #13
ok i have set it to 54g Auto so ill see if it makes any differance
EDIT:
still no differance im still getting 14k latency.
Answer #14
as far as i know… wireless is bad for gaming… even on a wireless lan network..your latency can go CRAZY… instead of a 1-10ms range from a wired network…
you are using wireless right? try to use a wire to connect to the internet..
let us know of any improvement
