Problems With Foreign Letters in Subtitles

I decided to download some Polish subtitles for some of my movies/series,
and I got this problem with some letters.
In particular the letters with some symbols in them, the ones that aren’t used globally etc..(eg: Ą ą Ć ć Ę ę Ł ł Ń ń � � Ś ś Ź ź Ż ż)
So I play the video file (normal .avi, subtitles are .srt), and get these symbols:
And When I open the .srt file with Notepad to check on the letters, same thing:
So do I have to re-do all the weird subtitles by myself, or is it just some little mistake that can be quickly fixed?

Did you changed your media player sub settings so that your sub language is the right one?
How do I do that?
Never heard of that stuff before, to be honest.

First of all what media player do you use?
Media player classic,Kmplayer,Bsplayer,vlc …
Yea, just the normal Windows Media Player.
Have you enabled “Unicode” Font feature?
I don’t use windows Windows Media Player.You should better wait for another member to tell you or download Kmplayer or vlc that i will be able to give you instructions

That’s bad,alright,I think you should browse some nonLatin alphabets in google then check if you can view them correctly.Try to save them in notepad,there you’ll be asked if you want to save it as Unicode.
I advice you download VLC here:
http://www.videolan.org and try it if works.
Yea, I just copied and pasted the letter “ę” into the .srt file, it told me about that Unicode thing.
I saved it, and it popped up as the letter “ę” on screen (in Windows Media Player).
So that means I’m going to change all the letter myself then?
Downloaded the VLC player btw.
No,it was just a test to see if your OS has supports unicode.Now well if you try VLC it should be OK
Doesn’t seem to be working either.
I think the problem lies in the .srt/notepad file itself.
Cause when I download the subtitle, unzip it, and then check the file, it’s full with those weird symbols…
Open the movie with vlc.Right click on the screen of vlc while playing – go to interface – preferences -subtitles – default encoding and select the language of your sub
Click save and close vlc.Open again the movie with vlc and just drag the srt file to vlc

This works with all good good media player.The settings will not be exactly the same but this is the general idea

VLC does have to seem this little problem though.
The subtitles seem to be stuck on the screen for the period of time whenever there isn’t anything being said.
It’s a minor thing though, at least they work.
That’s probably a problem with the subs you downloaded and not with vlc
Make sure the names of the file you want to play and the name of the subtitle is precisely the same if you don’t want to drag-drop everytime
I recommend Media Player Classic as well if you have problems in VLC,about the stucking of subs,you can adjust it in advanced settings if I remember correct.

Well no, cause when I opened them once again in the normal WMP then the letters were screwed up again, but they didn’t get stuck lol

In classic you will find the setting in subtitles – default style under font
Yea, tried that, I clicked “EASTEUROPE (238)”, but the symbols are still there.
Maybe try to use Subedit player It’s polish program but you can change language to english. I use it all my life and it has no problem with polish subtitles.
Thanks for the suggestion, but it still shows up with weird letters.
No ideas then , in your OS,have you change the language to EN ?
This worked for me when I was trying to get Thai subtitles to work on my laptop with normal windows language still in English
Open up subtitle file in Firefox, it still displays odd characters. From view menu select Character Encoding, then selected the correct encoding for your language. Then the subtitles should display in the correct foreign characters in Firefox (if you have the language installed on you laptop at least). Copy and paste it all from Firefox into notepad, then save over the top of the original file, making sure to select UTF-8 encoding. (and make sure to save the file as a subtitle file, not a tx file!) If any ones else is having trouble with other languages, this could also be a solution to your problem. Just select you appropriate encoding in Firefox.
