Try virtual dub. It’s complicated. But the best. Google some tuts for it.

You can use any video conversion software to reduce the size of an AVI file, all you need to do is reduce the resolution size eg 720×576 to 320×240. So in effect your changing the screen size so it’s displayed on a smaller screen eg PSP, mobile phone etc.

All my movies already are of 320×240 resolution.

If your talking about encoding AVI to other formats but exactly the same try matroska. (MKV) You get almost half the video size of AVI and around the same quality of AVIs.
