PC Electricy Bill?
August 5th, 2016
Well if your computer / laptop is on 24/7 it will cost around about 50 a month, I only know because my mom moans at me
Just hook up a dynamo to your mum’s exercise bike
Calculate usage

Find out price, calculate.
Perhaps this will help a little (or not)…

Very unlikely. But it does depend on your PC’s power saving capabilities. Newer PC’s cut the CPU frequency and voltage to save power and so use less power. Also newer CPU’s can turn off part of the CPU that is not being used and so also save some power there as well. Graphics cards use lots of power, more than the CPU so it also depends on your graphics card and what it is doing.
My PC has NO power saving apart from being a mobile and running at a lower voltage than the regular CPU’s of it’s type. Graphics card is not all that high spec (6800 ultra) but still uses a fair bit. My PC is on almost 24/7 and my total electric bill is only 30 a month and that includes everything in the house, so I doubt whether your PC is using 50 of electricity. Unless you have a super high clocked P4 CPU which use a hell of a lot of power.
You could get a power usage monitor from Maplins and see how much your PC is using. I have one (it’s just another gadget ) and it can show the current voltage and amps, watts/VA being used, total time and KWHs of power used and a few other things, from which you can work out the cost. They cost about 25 so see if your dad will buy you one to prove one way or other how much power you are using You could bring into the conversation at some point when he is not angry and complaining about your power usage that newer PC’s have better power saving features and maybe he could get you a new one instead of the one you are using. I bet your PC does not use more than 20, 25 at most. Tell him to find a cheaper energy supplier
Make sure you use your Monitors power saving when you are away from your PC and if you will not be using it then power it off. My CRT monitor uses 100watts less when it is in power saving mode rather than fully on. It is meant to have a 160 watt max usage but that might be for a higher colour temperature than the sRGB mode I use.
I use Wizmo which can turn off the monitor and activate it’s power saving (can do other things as well) when a certain key is pressed. I use Wizmo to put the monitor into power saving mode whenever I am away from it and power off when I go out or to bed.

It could be 3x that.
My power usage monitor shows 19KWH for 110 hours which is about 4.6 days and that works out to be about 11 a month. Taking into account the two different prices charged for electric it is very slightly higher as anything over 182 units per quarter are charged at about 57% more and I calculated at the discounted (over 182 unit) rate.

Weren’t you paying for your whole neighbourhoods electric though?

Here (Finland) someone made a test the result from a computer running 24/7 at 100% CPU usage, screen and printer only off at night, the cost for 1 year was 105 euros.

Your electricity prices must be a lot less than 50% of what they are here which doesn’t seem likely. Unless you use wind or wave power or maybe have half your population riding bicycles with dynamos connected to your national electricity grid.
Probably a very bad calculation done by nursery children or something. Computers use a lot more power than that, mine has used 19KWH in 4.6 days. What power usage did they quote as that would give a better indication and would exclude local electricity pricing.

I average around 30 pcm for my PC in the UK, I think that’s about the average as mentioned earlier in this thread.
I think the most important thing really would be to look at why you have the PC on 24/7 and see if you can shorten the time being used. If you downloading, why not do this overnight when the electricity is cheaper? Buying a new energy efficient PC is not really make that much difference at 1st, maybe in the long run but remember fuel prices will go up/down.
As I suggested maybe looking into your PC usage and try to work out when you find it’s important to use the PC and why.
PS …. you might want to consider a P/T job
