Overclocking – Crashing Unstable?

August 5th, 2016

So my computer is crashing, very frequently which is an annoyance. I overclocked my computer a while ago, it has been ok, crashed a few times but they were rare. Now its doing it more often.
I have tried changing the CPU voltage, slightly increasing and running intel burn test to test for stability. I did this and it worked yet right after it said it was stable it crashed. Specs: Intel Q6600 @ 3.2ghz
Windows Home Premium 64bit
4 gigs ram
Arctic cooling pro fan – CPU temps – no load ~30oC with load – ~70-80oC (realtemp 3.0)
Here is what my BIOS settings are atm.
CPU ratio setting – 8
FSB Freq – 400
Ram timings – 5 5 5 15
CPU voltage – 1.31875
DRAM voltage 2.10
Any help is appreciated, I don’t know whether its vista but I’d like to sort it out as it makes my computer very hard to work on!
Thank you!

Lets see some more information: Default Ram speed, cpu stepping, current ram speed etc.
70-80 degrees is not a good temperature for normal operation.
You want it to be under 60 degrees celsius.
Although Q6600’s have a bad reputation for heat.

Run Prime 95 stress test for at least a few hours. Most people prefer to run the P95 test overnight, because that will be 100% sure there is no issues. Usually it let’s you know of any errors within the first 5 mins. You shouldn’t increase the voltage for the CPU unless the PC does not post, then you have to reset the last settings done (clear CMOS, or there is a hotkey depending on the manufacturer) and then bumb the voltage up. The Q6600 is 2.4ghz stock, and unless you have a aftermarket cpu cooler and some good thermal paste you shouldn’t be overclocking to that extent.

if its crashing, then youve overclocked too far. turn the voltage/clock down and or get a better cooler

Thanks for hte help, yes I have great cooling, you misread – CPU temps – no load ~30oC I rarely have it over 50oC when doing anything with my computer so overheating it not a problem.
For the default ram speed, i have not altered the ram timings so I assume they are currently at default.
Here is some more info.

I’ll run prime 95 for a while and see whats happens
EDIT: argghh I just reset all the BIOS to default so its at 2.4ghz and everything is at is was when it was before and i’m just on itunes and it crashes! wtf…I have a feeling its vista..any other reasons for it to crash?

What is your motherboard brand and model?
What is your RAM?
What is your Power Supply?
What is your Video Card?
