NTFS on Windows 8

August 4th, 2016

Hey all, kind of continued from here:
http://www.google.com?t=17106344&highlight=
Different subject
I’m done building, installed 8 first and got up and running then hooked up my data drive to find myself sitting at the bootscreen waiting and waiting.
Thinking it was the SATA port I was connected to I tried various other ports to no avail so I finally got fat up and installed 7 and hooked up the data drive with no issues, right into Windows, found new hardware, rebooted and there’s my drive like it should.
Then I got to thinking NTFS changes and sure enough
http://news.cnet.com/8301-10805_3-57360257-75/windows-8-will-adopt-new-resilient-file-system-but-only-on-server/
Now I’m not on server but the ReFS still applied according to other sites and finding people with USB drives that are having the same issue along with finding themselves with all the data going POOF!!
Any idea’s on how to convert the drive?

Answer #1
Wait is the drive formatted with REFS or not ? The client is able to read just not create (there’s a release on MDL forums that lets you create REFS volumes in the client) Go into the disk management snapin (create and format hard disk partitions on the start screen) and see whats going on. If its not there your motherboard probably has some non standard sata controller and you need the drivers
REFS isn’t just applied to drives you have to format them yourself.

I’m not sure if it needs REFS or not I’m going off assumption there or common sense, LOL
Can’t get to disk management, won’t boot if I hook the internal data drive up.
Nope, drivers are installed if I unhook the drive I can boot right up and device manager was all good.
Now, under the Windows 7 install Yes, did have to install the SATA controller drivers but after that my data drive was no problems accessing.
Answer #3
Wont boot as in bsod or wont boot as in boot manager not found. You could have your boot priority’s messed up in the bios.

Neither, your not following me
OS boots fine as long as data dive (Second Drive) is not hooked up.
Answer #5
Right but the cause could be incorrect boot priorities causing it to try and boot from the data drive.
You could try connecting the sata cable after its booted to eliminate this possibility.
Will need to refresh the disk management snapin

But I turned around, formatted, installed 7 and same setup had no issues.
Answer #7
On the same disk, That means its the sata controller drivers then. Id do the same thing though boot and then plug it in when booted.

Yep on the same disc
Drive 0 – SSD used for OS only
Drive 1 – SATA Data drive
The data drive would not be hot swappable

Do clarify, Are you saying that windows doesn’t boot at all once you got your other HDD hooked
up or that it does boot up but freezes on the loading screen?
Have you thought of trying a different SATA cable?
What’s the motherboard model?

How did that happen? Don’t tell me you’ve been eating em’ bonbons again!
Kidding, I know it was just a typo
Answer #10
HaHa Rob Freezes on the loading screen once I hook up the data drive
The Asus P8Z77-V Pro
No, didn’t try different SATO cable, they were all brand new plus it working on the Windows 7 Install worked fine.
I might add here, this data drive was last on an XP system so going to Windows 8 could there be a NTFS changes?
Changes requiring it to be converted?

Good point. There might be a problem with the HDD itself. If you got Win7 too in a multi-boot setup, Get it checked with this app:
http://www.google.com?t=14769892&start=0
Otherwise, Use partedmagic (bootable) as I’ve explained here:
http://www.google.com?p=69432317#69432317
Also, It might be BIOS related, I’ve checked the BIOS update history on ASUS’s website
and under version 1504 it says “Improve compatibility with Windows 8 OS.” not sure
if this is related to the problem, But it’s certainly worth a try (if the HDD checks out alright)

No. There haven’t been any changes to NTFS since 2001, According to WP:

Answer #12
Yea, thought of BIOS also I got the latest on the site
Not the hard drive, that’s why I went to Windows 7 as confirmation its fine there.
Only change was 8, has to be something with 8

Forget about Win7 for a moment, Have you actually checked the HDD with a SMART monitoring
app? If not, Then you can’t be certain that it doesn’t have a problem! Just because it boots with Win7 it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s in good condition.
Maybe Win8 is just less tolerant to certain HDD problems.

ASUS freezing when booting with data drive connected….
A simple one. Many of the recent ASUS boards have an issue with “legacy USB”. Go into Bios and disable legacy usb support. Voila – no longer freezes. Unfortunately, it also means if you want to boot from a usb device, you have to go into bios and change that option to enabled. Not bad really … stops the occasional accident.
The device doesn’t actually freeze btw. If you let it sit for hours, it will eventually continue; for example, I popped in a 1G usb key once – booted with delay. Trying a 3T usb drive it took 3 hours or so. Turning off legacy gives you back the instant boot thank goodness.

Sorry Rob I haven’t got back, needed some time to get things done and then do some troubleshooting
Ok first lets get some points of reference before I confuse you.
SSD drive: OS only
200 Gig SATA data drive: One I’m having issues with.
80 Gig SATA drive: Spare drive
The 200 gig is the data drive so I backed it up and figured lets boot off the Windows 8 DVD and see if I can see it, if so great, leave it in and do a install to the SSD drive and put 8 on it.
Guess what, same start screen during the boot process, just freezes and that’s off the windows 8 DVD.
The 80 gig I have listed on e-bay (Maybe not for long) it’s been in the old computer and used as the data drive so I thought, lets test it on the same cable/port and see if I can boot. In goes the Windows 8 disc, booted and right to the drive screen, I can see both the SSD drive and the 80 gig drive, was a go, no issues getting there either no freezing up.
Think I’ll be keeping the 80 gig and e-baying the 200 gig while I can.
UPDATE
Ok its not the drive
I just tried 2 not 1 but two other 180 Gig drives on the same port, no go.
Only the 80 gig drive will allow me to boot, what’s the common denominator?
All three that won’t boot are Maxtor drives The 200 Gig, and the two 180Gigs are all Maxtors
The 80 Gig drive is a Western Digital??? WTF
