Need help:Configuring QoS on a Zyxel Rouoter

June 13th, 2018

Hi, I have WiFi at home and there are couple devices connected to it. I’m a gamer and the other guys just love to spam media streaming. I was told that i can setup the QOS on my router to prioritize my bandwidth need. I opened my router setting for QOS and i was presented with this. Unfortunately, the guy who told me about this didn’t know to configure it either.

These are the drop-down options;
RULE
~ For “Applications”: IGMP, SIP, H.323, MGCP, SNMP, DNS, DHCP, RIP, RSTP, RTCP, RTP
~ For “Protocol ID” TCP/UDP, TCP, UDP, ICMP, IGMP
(if i choose IPP/TOS)
~ For “IP Precedence Range”: #s 0-7
~ For “Type of Service”: Normal Service, Minimize Delay, Maximize throughput, Maximize reliability, Minimize monetary cost
~ For “802.1p”: #s 0-7
ACTION
~ For “IP Precedence Remarking”: #s 0-7
~ For “Type of Service Remarking”: Normal Service, Minimize Delay, Maximize throughput, Maximize reliability, Minimize monetary cost
~ For “802.1p Remarking” 1st box: #s 0-7
~ For “802.1p Remarking” 2nd box: Key Net Traffic(RIP, OSPF), Voice, Video, IGMP, Key Data
~ For “Queue #”: Low, Medium, High, Highest.
Now, there’s also an “add” and “delete” buttons on the bottom of that screen which i believe indicates that there should be rules for different IP/device.
I hope you guys can tell me how to configure this stuff. Thanks in advance!

You didn’t mention the model number but see if this helps:

Thanks for the reply.
Here’s the model number: ZyXEL P-660HN-T1A
I checked the link you provided. Got couple of useful insights, the only thing is that its really outdated and it didn’t mention any gaming set-up tips or anything like that.
What I’m trying to do here is to shape my bandwidth to prioritize online gaming and allow streaming media and other stuff to come after all the gaming needs.

You’ll have to do something like this:
– Determine which ports the game uses.
For eg, i found this bit of info for COD Black Ops 2:
This game uses ports 36081, 3074, 3075, 3478 UDP (User Datagram Protocol) and ports 80, 81,443, 3074, 5223 TCP (Transmission Control Protocol.)

– Next, you can create a rule to match your computer’s MAC address along with those ports and set the Type of service remarking to Minimize delay. You’ll get a better explanation of the interface from the user guide here:

You might have to tinker with the different options a bit if what i mentioned above doesn’t work but that should essentially outline what you need to do

Here’s a good site where you might find your answer; and try searching around google, I’m sure you’ll find something. http://portforward.com/

Actully by the looks of things he can sinply use the interface he uses or the mac address of his client to prioritize traffic.
Create a rule with “activated” checked and whatever information identifys your main client ie port, source mac address, ip address etc.
For the action use dscp & value 5.
Simple

Thanks for the replies. Got couple questions though. I am a real noob when it comes to these stuff.
1. How do i identify w/c port my game uses? and where do i put it?
2. Where do i put my MAC/IP, on source or destination? and who’s mac/ip should i put on the other?
3. Should i make another rule for the other devices for the main rule to be effective?
I downloaded the user manual of the router and read it. It very broad though. Cant get anything out of it that’ll help me set the QoS up to my specific need.
Answer #7
1 Dont worry about the ports because that will change from game to game
2 do a source mac address ie what you see in ipconfig
3 No just one rule prioritising all traffic from your main client will do.

Thanks!
I think ill just put my mac/IP on the source slots and leave destination blank. I’ve couple more question please, if you dont mind.
Im just lost with these options:
Applications: IGMP, SIP, H.323, MGCP, SNMP, DNS, DHCP, RIP, RSTP, RTCP, RTP Protocol ID: TCP/UDP, TCP, UDP, ICMP, IGMP
802.1p Remarking: Key Net Traffic(RIP, OSPF), Voice, Video, IGMP, Key Data What do i choose for online gaming purposes?

Here’s what i think should be the values:
Applications: Don’t think any of those would fit here
Protocol ID: TCP/UDP
802.1p Remarking: Don’t think anything would fit here
