Need help with mkv to avi

Hi guys I need help with converting videos form mkv (300mb) to avi, so that I can wright on dvd and watch on dvd player,
I had wright 1 DVD with 5 avi movies (700mb) and it was playing on my dvd player, but I had tried to wright mkv format but it doesn’t work,
is there any software to convert mkv to avi so it won’t loose the quality and also have around 700mb.
