I have been using OjoSoft Total Video Converter with pleasing results.
You will need to make sure you have the full CCCP installed to process the MKV files correctly though.

Right now I am converting a 8GB .mkv into Xvid .avi and it will take approximately 8 hours, is that normal? My pc is okay, it’s an AMD dual core 4800+ with 2 Gigs of RAM.
Answer #11
u can also use Xilisoft video conv. . i use it for the same reason as yours. moreover if u are not concerned about the increase in file size then i think u will have the best quality

I have the same problem, got an iomega screenplay plus device and it can’t handle .mkv.
Now I’m a fan of HD and want to convert the files so that they do not lose any quality. Unfortunately, this seems to take years with SUPER converter. Videoscale size: no change, 23,976 frames per second (like the .mkv), 8208 bitrate video, 48k audio with 448kbps. In the top field I just left MEncoder selected. Any tweaks?
