What error are you getting when failing to open an .mkv in GOM?
Yeah the error message would help.
Are you using Combined Community Codec Pack? Look at this MKV guide for more details –

thx for the reply, there’s no error msg of any kind, gom jsut wont play it. anyway gonna try downloading zoom player…see if it can open it.
You need the correct codecs and splitters to play MKV files successfully. If you open the files your having problems with using GSpot and press [1] in the bottom pa it will show what windows is using or trying to use to open them.
You don’t need K lite Mega, it’s bloat that you are unlikely to ever need.
For MKV files all that is needed is ffdshow and Matroska Splitter. CoreAVC would help if your PC is not very fast. You may be missing Matroska Splitter.
use KMplayer.. its was better than GOM and u dont have to install any codecs.. just like VLC
Even Jet Audio should play them fine…….
VLC
Give that a try, i downloaded many MKv rips and all have worked fine
ffdshow and Matroska Splitter. CoreAVC
these with zoom player work for me
im sticking with KM player… open up everything fine.
thx all for the help !
It’s good that KM Player worked for you. But if you ever need to convert a MKV file to DVD for example, you would still have problems because you have not really solved it. It’s probably the splitter you are missing which was causing the problem and if so, not installing it will mean that anything that uses Directshow will not be able to decode the MKV files correctly.
im sticking with KM player... open up everything fine.
thx all for the help !
Yes, a good player, and am pretty sure that it would install all the necessary splitters too.
Try VLC its the best player ever….
try kmplayer.it is powerful to play most formats of video and audio
