i dont watch tv series but lets start with a popular movie Ex Machina http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0470752/
actually you can get your answer from imdb with advanced search function which no one uses. i made a list of sci-fi themed feature movies which are released on 2014 and after with more than 1000 votes according to user rating in descending order.

for personal opinion , there are many good movies on that list but among which i had watched , those are better than the rest with their originality which is one of the most important thing for me when it comes to science fiction.

Forget about Killjoys, it is awful acting, Second chance also. The X files maybe 1th and 6th episode. The 100 so so. The best is Game of thrones but I’m not sure is that sci-fi. For movies the mindfuk is Predestination and District 9 but that is 2009 but its worth watching (Sci-fi like documentary, also mindfuk), Martian is not bad but the best is Interstellar.

Have watched everything in that list already and all were great movies. Thanks! Was hoping maybe there were some more obscure titles I hadn’t heard of or maybe some series that was up and coming.
there are 2 things you can do to broaden the search scope 1- setting lowest rating 5 or less which will lead you to crappy movies
2- setting least number of votes 900- 800 – 700 and so on but this will lead you to movies which are only watched by director’s relatives
those 2 thing may work for horror genre since its user ratings are really inconsistent and there is a chance that you can find some less known good movies but it wont work sci-fi. i did the optimal search for both who is new to the genre and wanna watch only the best and fan of genre who wants to watch mediocre and above.
I liked Haven ran on syfy from 2010 to 2115 also Eureka ran from 2006 to 20012
