Is it possible to remove a HDD password?
August 7th, 2016
Does anyone have experience in removing a BIOS-set HDD password (I don’t care about the data inside)? Is it even possible? I tried searching online but I am not thoroughly convinced it’s possible. Problem is that my friend brought me his laptop for cleaning, I removed the laptop battery because I was trying to open it, next thing I know BIOS requires a password (which I already cleared) now the HDD is asking for the same thing too!!
My friend bought the laptop pre-owned and doesn’t remember ever setting a password. What a load of crap, acer laptop prompts for password only after it’s completely out-of-power and not on regular system boot-ups, how the F was I supposed to know that?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
The hard drive is probably encrypted. Try to search for cracking tools, they’re usually under Linux.
not on this board they’re not. Hacking/cracking tools aren’t allowed
My “friend” brought me a drive that he needed to “access”. I’m sure it fell off a truck but sometimes it’s healthier just to ignore such thoughts. It was one of the new ones where the password is on the drive itself. I tried any tricks I knew. I did some research but the few answers I found were beyond my ability or my desire to learn. It’s been awhile but I believe I could get into the bios or put it on a usb drive connector. And I tried Linux stuff also. But from what I learned it made a good toy for my 4 yr. old grandson to learn how to take things apart with a hammer. I think he got into it.
If you haven’t already you could Google here, justin case..

Might just be lucky, although I would keep the hammer handy
If you don’t need the information on the drive, just reformat it
This can be done without a password

Just format the drive. Problem solved.

Option 2 seems viable, I would give it a try if my HDD was still locked. Luckily my friend remembered the password.
and should really read the original post before posting something
