is a nissan altima a good first car?

August 6th, 2016

Hi I am in need of a starter car. This is going to be my personal car so is a nissan altima 2008 s a good car? I heard something is wrong with the CVT whatever that means. I like the altima 2008 because it has an aux connector so I won’t have to buy/ try to install an aftermarket stereo just so I can play my music. I also like that it’s a touch to start button. The only thing I don’t like is it has no sunroof .
The car I am looking at is here: http://www.fitzmall.com/Inventory/Detail/0324362011135/USED-2008-Nissan-Altima
Seems good price for a 2008 and only 89k miles.

See, already 3 websites that say's the CVT transmission is bad.
Then you have just answered your own question.
A good “first car” is anything that you can afford to buy, insure and keep full of fuel.

But I really like it :/ Especially the start button because that means a key+car fob or clicker whatever you call it won’t weight me down that much inside my pockets plus my car key chain won’t have to many keys. Right now my car key chain has my mail key, house key,car key, my gym membership, and plus the car clicker.
With some pants my pants fall down a little so I have to die them because my key chain is a little heavy.

For a first car?
There’s nothing inherently wrong with CVT – for a new driver it’s good because you won’t have that feeling of “oddness” by comparing it to what you’ve driven before.
People who have had other cars comment that CVT is strange – continuously variable gearing feels like the car is slipping on the clutch or continually changing revs (which it is, really).
The Nissan Altima CVT HAS had “judder” problems – an odd juddering hesitation when you take off from standing or accelerate when driving.
For my mind, I question not the choice of the car but the wisdom in spending 10K on a “first car” – I think you chould be looking at a little older car, maybe a hatchback, Golf, etc – £5k at the most.
A little Panda, maybe..
To spend 10k just because you like the button start and the AUX plugs? Are you a lotto winner?
(( No, I don’t think £ 10 000 is good value for a 6 year old car with 90 000 miles! Especially 90K miles on a CVT transmission!))
………
Or this:
Nissan Note 1.6 N-Tec 5dr Auto – £7,300
2011 (60 reg), Hatchback
distance: 83 miles
25,000 miles
Automatic
1.6L
Metallic RED, Black Part leather interior, Nissan connect sat nav system, Bluetooth telephone connection, Cruise control + speed limiter, 16″ 6 spoke alloys wheels, USB connection,..
Would be a good 1st car.

I would be cautious about a buying a CVT with 90K miles on it. The mileage on this car is higher than average for its age and you have no maintenance history on how well the previous owner(s) took care of it.
Push button start and aux port should be way down the priority list on shopping for a used car that is not going to be expensive problems for you.
Get some pants that fit, pull them up, and tighten your belt. Yes, I’m officially an old guy.

I really like this car http://www.fitzmall.com/Inventory/Detail/JN1RZ24D0TX960083/USED-1996-Nissan-300ZX But its a 2 door means insurance will be high plus its a v6 so no way gonna waste to much gas :/

Here’s an interesting article that has it listed as a used car you shouldn’t buy.

Nissan? Haha. Please go to a real mechanic or anyone who knows about cars and they’ll tell you not to get Nissan, Honda, Hyundai or Mazda. They’re build quality is garbage and they all have major problems. If you want a good car, whether it be a first or 20th, stick with Toyota (Lexus) and Subaru. They’re solid performers and reliability is world class, there’s a reason Toyota’s the most reliable company in the world. If you go American only buy GM (Chevrolet, Cadillac, Pontiac, Buick, Hummer, GMC). And European stick with Volvo and Benz. But I doubt you’ll look into those.
Good luck!

I guess you haven’t been reading about all the deaths and recalls connected with GM cars.
