Installing apk on droid x?

Hey guys,
so basically I try to install APKs to my droid x I have astro file manager and app installer Heres what I did
First dled the apk
Copied it to root of memory card from windows
Opened astro and app installer
The issue is I cant see any of the apps and all the folders dont pop up that were on the computer.
There are all sorts of folders but are different.
I tried pressing home but that didnt work either.

Strange. What I done is made a new folder on my memory card, then I use WIFI explorer pro to transfer them to my phone from my computer in to that folder. Then browse to the folder in Astro and the apps are in there. Then you can open app manager and install within Astro. You don’t even need any Astro…Just copy the apps to your memory card…The default file manager will do…Just browse and run the apk file…
Look in the applications icons after installing…

Thats strange none of the folders on the droid show on the computer in my computer…
Or do I need to access it some how else

Once you connected your phone to the PC…Drag the notification screen down and select the USB device…You will be asked if you want to mount the The memory card…Go on yes….That will make the memory card accessible on your PC…
You might want also to check your phone settings and set the PC connection to Storage Device…
