Huge PC Problem (can’t do anything) :(

something has gone badly wrong and i can no longer on any file or anything, not even items on the control panel or stuff which is on cd’s or external storage..
Clicking on windows update somehow managed to open firefox so at least i can ask for help!
every time i try to open a file an error message pops up saying,
Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. you may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.
I have tried everything including system restore and this has really ruined my day off of work

Thanks for the reply! I had read that thread any many similar. well.. after removing internet explorer in safe mode the problem seems to be gone (touch wood)
There is another problem i am experiencing, not sure about the rules of mentioning a different issue in the original thread so i will start a new one.. thanks for your help, now i can actually use my PC again. maybe i will see you other in my other thread.
