How / where can you find out if your mobile device can receive updates?

August 4th, 2016

Hey forum, I know it may seem like a complete newbie question, but let me clear some things up first.
I have a modified android device, or in other words, I have rooted it before and now it says its modified.
So when I go to the options panel on my device and try to get updates, I get a popup box that says that my device was modified and I should try using the application (Smart switch, by Samsung) to do an update.
Long story short, is there any reliable way to find out over the net whether or not my device can receive (for example) the latest firmware updates?

its risky if your device has a modified os, and you do a update from samsung, it may get bricked, if its only rooted, then it shouldnt have a issue, but if you do the update it will become unrooted. however updating your device when a modified system is very risky be sure what you are doing. as some devices are a nightmare to unbrick

The second you root your device you semi “void” your right to OTA’s. Some will work but with a risc of causing issues upon reboot (samsung security updates), other like full fledge OTAs that modify the OS in a more significant way (eg going from Android 5.1 to Android 6.0) will simply refuse to update from the get go if the system partition has been modified in anyway. This can be “reset” by manually flashing the system.img through ADB and then applying to OTA, but you WILL lose root and will have to root again). Anyway this really isn’t the best place to ask. You should be posting this over at xda-developers.com and in your device specific forum. More expert ppl will be able to help you there.
BTW you still lookin for that Jamie’s APK as in your sig? I can hook you up, but it won’t be a cracked one, so no guarantee you’d be able to download the video’s etc…
