How to play roms on my 3DS?

I understand that it’s difficult to play 3ds roms right now, but is there anyway I can just play the normal DS roms or do I have to buy a normal nintendo DS in order to do so? If not, could someone show me what to buy & where? Also, where to download roms? Thanks.
