which program to use? (free program)
Why would you want to?
I use AVIDemux (free) to do that
http://avidemux.sourceforge.net/
open the file in it
set video to “MPEG 4 ASP (xvid)”
hit settings and select “2 pass size” or “quantitizer” under encoding mode
(under filters you can select transform/resize if you want to shrink the frame)
set audio to MP3
select bitrate under settings
leave format as “AVI”
convert
you can google “free mkv to avi converter” for others
