How to add a friend on steam

Can someone please tell me how to add a firend on steam ?? When I click to add someone it says that I must buy a game befor that . Is there any illegal way to do it ?

Nope there isn’t, even if you get the free HL2 Deathmatch. You still have to buy a game, games start from $2.

Why do you think that sucks?
If your not gaming with Steam, what’s the point of adding friends on it?
If your just chatting, MSN or such will do fine.
Valve uses this tactic to combat spam and its effective, they are making cash at the same time.

I do kinda think that sucks. But yeah, get a game you want off it. At least then you can add friends and play a game you want to play.
