HDD failure

August 4th, 2016

So thats what i have.. luckily it isnt my main HD, but other 2 old HDD’s.
The first one is a Samsung SV4084H 40GB, it dont give a signal of life since it died, wont make any noises putting a power cable and if you put the IDE cable on it, the computer HD Led keeps flashing, with 1 second interval ( 1 sec on, 1 sec off ), i think this one dont have any slight chance but anyway there’s lot of pros here and they might know a way to fix, or at least to recover the data.
I managed to get it working once or twice, but even a slight movement on the PC it would stop working, and making it work back was a pain to my emotional side ( boring, annoying and frustrating ) and my finger ( i had to beat the side of it )
The second one is a Seagate Model ST330630A 30GB, It starts up the Disk engine ( i hear a ‘high’ RPM engine running ) but something inside just dont want to start up ( i keep hearing a ‘Tick..Tick……………………………Tick..Tick…………………………..Tick..Tick… … i can record if u guys want ), i gave him some beats to see if it could start up, nothing. Idk where exactly this noise comes from, but its near where you put the power cable, or around that.
When you put the jumper settings to ‘slave’, this noise dont happen, but the PC dont even try to discover it ( goes through, saying ‘Not Detected’ ), and on ‘Cable Select’ settings, it gives me this noise, but it keeps on the ‘Detecting Device, press (ESC) To cancel’, so it looks like its trying to find.
This one had was on a ‘oh, its on?’ computer, used to keep 24/7 on and under a closed small computer with bad ventilation at 30C ( ambient temp ) ( this PC’s processor is still alive, aswell all other components ) and then it suddently started to do that
Both HD’s are out-of-line ( not in production anymore )
Both got semi-precious data like hard-to-find games and softwares, and of course, both will give me 70GB xtra.
My main objective is recover the data, the second of course is to make it working properly back again.
Thanks in advance.

put up the sound here..I want to hear it too if it’s the same as mine…expert here would know what caused the sound
I have 2 hdd which has died and they gave me the ‘tick…kick…grick’ sound before they die. I swear if I ever hear the clinking sound again, it would be too soon. read that once you start hearing the sound, it’d be better to send it to the shop or you’ll only make it worse. When I sent mine, he said the media disk in the hdd has broken ( think he meant that literally) and any data recovery is impossible
it also could be any reason like as for the clinking sound is there any screws too long that's touching the inside of your drive?
Answer #2
Search for ‘plastic bag’ in the Help Desk section and you will find a few posts about getting data of a busted HDD.
One method mentioned is to put the HDD in a sealed plastic bag into the freezer for a few hours. Apparently it has worked for some people.

Hm, this case dont use screws, it uses a type of.. idk i’ll put a pic

Thing that holds the HD on the case

Size of the fixing thing, close-up.
On the last computer, it was using the screws that came with him, on this computer i’m testing, it wasnt using a screw at all
I’ll put the HD here and show you the sound.. i’ll be back in a couple of mins

The recording

I made it on 3GP, i thought it could be easier to play than .AMR but looks like everything plays .amr lol
Hope u got QuickTime there.

lmao..that is loud..i felt helpless listening mine sounded almost the same…except now it doesn’t even bother to give me the clanking greeting
i want to try the freezer trick, swears by it

Will try when i find a Ziploc here
lmao..that is loud..
Well isnt that loud actually, its coz the microphone ‘boosts up’ when the sound isnt loud enough for clear capture.. but i think you get it.
Btw, the HD started once while i was recording, but it wasnt being detected by my BIOS, i hear it start, but not a ‘constant noise’ of the startup, it sounded like in parts.
But meh i think it still have a lil chance of coming back to life… hope so.

lol..mine in the freezer is 40gb samsung too …a 2 year old

Or use it as ice
I talked with my dad about that, he said that’s useful when you have problems on the DISK, coz the much you put data there, it increases the size by a little bit, but increases, and that can make it not working. putting in a freezer would make him small again and make data viewable, but he said that’s not possible to mechanical parts. Idk, you say, i dont have a ziploc plastic bag here, i’ll buy when i go to the shop
Answer #10
I haven’t tried ‘s method, but like I said, people have had success with it. The thing is, if you get the drive running, copy the data you want to another drive straight away.
Time is against you, so copy only the stuff you want/need, then if it’s still working you can grab the other stuff.
Good luck.
Answer #11
before trying the freezer trick try booting whit the drives connected to one cable @ a time
1st just the power cable
then just the data cable
then with both again
still not working reverse the order of connections, data 1st power 2nd
had a finicky maxtor that this used to work with
it would boot 10-15 times then not boot
this has a very slim chance of working, especially for the noisy drive, but won’t hurt the drive

I read that you tried the freeze hdd trick. I just knew about it. I have some questions .
– can I use the hdd straight out of the freezer? or should I wait for it to warm up a little?
I want to put it in external enclosure, covered in ice maybe, or in some insulator box
– when accessing it, can I put it in an upright position instead of the usual? (to avoid any moisture). I don’t know much about the mechanical stuff, but can my freezed hdd be readable that way?
– did condensation happened? there’s a way to avoid it?
thanks if you would help http://www.google.com?t=868956&start=0&highlight=

the colder the better, use it rt out of the freezer
as it warns it my become unreadable again
freezing it shrinks the metal in the drive increasing tolerances, as the drive warms the tolerances shrink I want to put it in external enclosure, covered in ice maybe, or in some insulator box
just do what you need to connect it, and repeat the process if needed

put it in a plastic bag before putting it in the freezer, nothing need after you take it out and any position is ok

that my be the only way to read it

Lol i’ll buy that ‘portable freezer’ to put my HDD in..
What’s actually happening here is, it used to start up like any normal HD and the computer could detect it ( funny note was the S.M.A.R.T. reported it as OK. ) but if any O.S. tries to detect it, the computer freezes up. Then i had the idea of formatting it ( my main objective was make the HD readable to put files in ) on FDISK, but then i remembered NTFS HD’s cant be read on DOS, and i had my main HD connected, so typing ‘Dir X:’ wouldn’t help in detecting which device I was formatting. So i shut down the computer, took the cables from the main HD and restarted it. The Seagate didnt work since then.
Actually, sometimes it do work, it starts up ( i hear the constant ‘trckkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk’ ) but the computer wont detect it, neither as a driver with a weird name.
I may go buy a Ziploc p.bag tomorrow, and i’ll try this. Hope at least i can open it.
Thanks for y’all help

Somethings damaged obviously, not sure what many parts in a HDD. You been moving it around lately? Maybe knocked it?

No, it simply suddenly stopped working.
It had some boot problems, wasnt starting the O.S. and any O.S. that tried to read it as slave, was locking up. Read the post above, it says what happened.
I think it’s the age, it got more than 5 years i think.. no wait, 5 years is the 40GB, this Seagate – 30GB might have 7 or more :S
The Seagate is the only one that give some life signals – I’ve declared the 40GB as Dead. Deserved rest, after weeks on, downloading for me ( Side note: It didnt die because the weeks on, but because a weird problem that’s happening with all Samsungs HD’s here – Wont work under 28C, it keeps doing what’s the Seagate does until warm up ( the seagate wont run cold or hot, didnt tried the freezer solution ) – and when it starts doing that you must let it do 3 times, then shutdown for a while, and turn back on, or else it’ll keep doing that all the day untill nobody knows – now i know, until his death, i turned the pc on and felt asleep on the sofa. Cold rain day killed my HD. )
Image
This Seagate dont even have a reason to stop working, he was a ‘non-worker’, was always off and only used to connect him to get files or make small backups ( not moving away from pc, mounted in the case ) and suddently, it started to not boot, then that.
A short answer for Worry:
‘Been moving it around lately?’
Once, to a PC to another, 3 Meters.
‘Maybe knocked it?’
Once, and with a finger, very light. It started working after that, then died again.
