It may be a standalone version but have you checked inside the directory?
yeah i have. theres no config. i pretty much tried opening everything.
you could try running the game in 640*480 compatability mode and then reset the settings ingame.

Ill try taking a screeny and post to see if theres something you see as a option. . . otherwise the rippers just messed up with this, by taking a vital option/file out.

How to manually change screen resolution and other game settings by editing FEAR 2 configuration files
FEAR 2 : Project Origin configuration files are stored in:
C:\users\YOURUSERNAME\Documents\WBGames\FEAR2\settings.cfg file on Vista or \My Documents\WBGames\FEAR2\settings.cfg on XP. All you need to do is to edit this file using a text editor such as Notepad. (Note: Settings.cfg file in FEAR 2 build 1.0.2255.0 is located in a subfolder.)
For example, if you want to change screen resolution manually to 1024x768, change the following lines as below:
"ScreenHeight" "768.000000"
"ScreenWidth" "1024.000000" There are several similar options in the settings.cfg file which you can manually edit easily. Please proceed with caution as improper editing of this file can cause you game not to load properly or behave in unpredictable ways.
Also be aware that games nearly always try to connect to the internet at startup, and if your firewall is set to stop it and ask your permission, it could be hidden behind the black screen and thats what stops you. Its certainly possible that the connect attempt occured right after the resolution change so you just put two and two together but got five. I use Zone Alarm set to the manual configuration so everything accept ZA itself has to ask permission and nearly every game I install trys to connect to the net. 80% of the time ZA pops up over the black screen so I can set it to no connection but 20% of the games stay black screen and you have trouble getting to the connection warning and havbe to play around.
The easiest black screens from a firewall stop are accessed by hitting the windows key on your keyboard or CTRL+ESC to get to the desktop, and there you would see the firewall warning of the connection attempt and you can respond. The worst ones you have to try and get to via the task manager when the desktop will not show, and its a hit and miss which could take 5 attempts to finally get a cursor for the warning choice boxes.

Totaly what i was looking for. . . But… I changed it to 1360×768 which is my screens recommended max (also what my desktop is currently set as.) saved the file. Double checked that it confirmed it was saved. open fear.exe Black screen with my cursor appears as before (like loading the exe file. ) then it blacks out again .
And i tried with 800×600 whichc is a pretty standard size. Same deal. . . Its like that when i enter the game it automaticly changes back to 1280×700 something (which my screen doesnt like). Tried to set the file as read only. now the settings in the file dont change… but still the same outcome. . .dont get it. And about the exe being blocked. Pretty sure it wasnt that. But checked to be safe. + my screen itself actually gives me a message saying ” Not Supported” when a (funny) not supported resolution is set.
sorry to bump. just trying to get it to work :S
