“EXPERT” Opinions PLEASE

November 30th, 2013

Farquard, I need your help, PLEASE
I am in the middle of an on-line discussion regarding if it is a good idea to change the setting in Windows 7/Vista for the number of processors to be active at startup.
The default of course is "0" for computer control. Some say to change this number to the maximum number one has available. In my case that would be 8 (4 cores each capable of hyper threading). Others say maybe no more than two, and then others ... well you see.
What is your expert opinion in regard to this setting?
Please reply as soon as you are able, as this discussion will begin again tomorrow night at 9:00pm eastern time.

It is a very old myth. At best, it does NOT work, at worst it makes the system unstable or hang on boot. The fact is that your system uses the maximum number of cores by default, so changing the values here would have no effect on your system. The setting exists ONLY for diagnostic purposes.
