Dvd drive issue. – Knowledge on drivers overall needed-

October 14th, 2013

So i had a drive die on me last night in my spare 360-
I found a old drive i had laying around and tried looking at it.-
It has issues with picking up on the discs.
But i found out that the laser actually is in perfect shape.
What i found out was this:
When i take it apart and push the laser gently away from the spinner (no idea what its called, but where the discs spins)- then put in a disc- it reads it after seconds.
If i take out the disc and close the tray, of course it wont find anything-
If i then place a disc back in the tray and close it, it takes mere seconds before it reports back with “open tray”.-
It seams as if the laser gets positioned in a bad location everytime there is no disc in the tray-
But as long as i keep a disc in or at least swap the disc whenever i take one out of the tray- it will stay in the right place to read the disc.
so there you have it.
Question now is. . . How can i solve this issue? No idea where the actual right and wrong position is, but it would seam to me that the wrong position is when it is as close to the spinner as it can get- But not sure of that.

Answer #1
When i take it apart and push the laser gently away from the spinner
that shouid happen automatically, does it seem to be trying to do that, like it’s binding up
the worm drive that positions the laser, is that loose or dirty ? (1)
the slide pin dirty or binding ? (2)

Answer #2
honestly both seam fine- A small amount of grease on there (guessing for making it smooth) otherwise nothing seams wrong. When it does pick up the disc (when i push it back at first) i read the discs fine- ( i can install them to hdd)
Answer #3
the drive with the top removed like above, if you close the drawer, do you see any attempt by the laser to move back & forth
also when you manually push the laser back does it seem to rise as well
like it’s not coming up all the way on it’s own
Answer #4
Well when i just close it without pushing the laser- the laser starts close to the spinner and 2 or 3 times moves a small amount back away from the spinner and forth towards the spinner. and the laser rises a few times.
When i push it back- it runs fine towards the spinner and finds the right point.
It seams to me that the laser cant find the start point and might be to close to the spinner? But no idea if thats the case.

You could try cleaning the laser lens with a cotton bud and rubbing (isopropyl) alcohol as shown here..

actually think i got it fixed. Was told about pod tweaking and decided to give it a try even tough i dont have a multimeter- Just screwed it like one or two degrees to the left or what would be like a couple of minutes on a clock and it reads perfectly now it seams.
But thanks so much for the responses and help guys.

Well done then…I been doing that with CD players for the last 20 years and it can be quite successful !.
