Can’T open avi & mkv files with Adobe Premier Pro CS4

I can’t open .avi & .mkv files with adobe premier Pro Cs4 .
Do I need to install codec ?
Is there softwares to do this ??

Surely not, I was having a similar problem, Are you drop dragging into the final composition layout, There are several things you have to do before you can start compositing, If all else fails, There is a codec pack called klite codec pack, its free (not that it matters) install that if it fails, restart is required I belive.
