Can XBOX 360 play HD movies?

August 7th, 2016

I have the XBOX 360 Premium I think it is? the $250 and I was wondering if I downloaded an HD movie on here and wanted to stream it to my xbox would it be able to play it?

HD or no HD, it depends on the file format.

Yes, VC-1 video encoded into containers such as Avi or WMV. File size of under 4GB because it reads FAT32 only.

I have spend weeks of research as i own a xbox 360 aswell and this is the best answer i believe.
Not really. It cannot play .mkv video or dts encoded hd sound. Which is what most blu-ray movies and hd movies are encoded with.
So what you can do is play hd files on your xbox 360 or even PS3 is to convert the file into say an .AVI file and convert audio from .DTS to AC3.
I have tried to do this but it can take hours and the quality seems to drop as i have personally done and tested this with Transformers 2. MKV with DTS is the way to go.
Another problem you will face is that the 360 will only recognise hard drives which are formated to FAT32. What does this mean? It means that the file cannot be over approx 4Gb. So you might have to split the movie into 2 parts.
All this is a headache BIG TIME!
So i decided to buy a media player that supports MKV and DTS.
Here is a link to the player, and where i bought it from:

NOTE: I am not trying to promote any products, just trying to help everyone understand.
This player will read ANYTHING and EVERYTHING you throw at it.
All i do is connect a External Hard Drive to it and i hit play.
No headaches and it reads everything including MKV with DTS. It will read all hard disk formats including FAT32 and NTFS.
NTFS is the one you want to format as i place full hd movies such as Terminator Salvation which is 13GB file. But it looks and plays awesome. (exact identical quality as the blue-ray release)
Something that unfortunately the xbox 360 will not do.
Sure it’s more money but it really is amazing. It plays with full 1080p support.
This is not the only player that can do this, but if you decide to do this just make sure it plays .MKV with DTS support!
Hope that helped you and everyone out there

you can buy the old HDDVD that try to compete with blue-ray. They lost now and theres no release for it anymore. Doesnt new 360’s come with a blu ray player ?
