Can I use an ipod formatted on a macbook with windows

Hi everyone,
Im trying to take music off my friends ipod and put it onto my computer, Im using sharepod however the ipod is formatted with a Mac where as Im using Windows, is there a way around this or should it still work regardless..
Also, Sharepod isn’t recognising the IPod, it suggested I put the IPod into disk mode, what will this do to the Ipod, will I loose the music on it by doing this?

If you format an iPod on a Mac, it can only be used on a Mac.
If you format an iPod on Windows, it can be used on Windows and Mac.
