Can a proxy steal my password or any information?
August 7th, 2016
This morning i couldn’t get my wordpress.com blog to open, i couldn’t even access the server. So i contacted my ISP and said that i had to change the proxy setting in Mozilla Firefox to something like “proxy.xxx.xxx.xxx” and with “1234” as the Ports.
So i did what they tell me, finally i could access wordpress.com, now before i sign in using that proxy, i wanna make sure that it safe. Can someone steal my password from that proxy? Thank you in advance!
Theoretically it would be possible yup. But the chances of that happening are like 0.1%
Many free proxies are setup to collect info, so I guess it all depends on whois running the proxy.
Here is a short answer.
The fact is, most open or free proxy servers are run by hackers. Their 'return on investment' is in stealing your personal information and getting access to your computer. If you have ever used a free proxy server, you might have wondered why they seem to go away all the time. Part of the reason for this is that the server accounts are set up by hackers who are using stolen credit cards. When they are discovered, they are shut down by the hosting companies.

and you will see loads.
Euro
. If you want to be safe you might as well purchase a VPN to protect yourself. I personally don’t use proxy sites, they are too unrealible and tend to sniff off data that you are using on their proxy.
Use premium proxy service, or VPN. Normally, it happens to get stolen.
yeah, free proxies are almost always dirty.
Thank you for the reply…
Yeah since it’s a blog i am accessing, i think it would be better if i don’t use proxies in Mozilla Firefox….Scary…errhh…
But if i don’t use proxy, the wordpress.com can’t be accessed, it happened this morning. Hope it will be fixed soon.
@ thank you for the URL, i’ll read it
Premium no,free always steal logins
Alright well to be honest I would be more worried about using a wireless connected computer in general to steal passwords then a proxy. Free or not. SSL are secure even over proxies but with a simple MITM attack from someone in on your so called safe wireless network can see plain text in the SSL field. Not to mention that none of the sensitive information is saved to that computer be it personal or public. Anyway continuing to proxies. Yes some hacker can mine your data when you are connected to them but this would take far too long and will not show them any saved passwords. Will however give them other information such as maybe Tax returns you have saved under your documents or credit card/online bill information saved. However if someone is hosting ones own proxy server such as a site ran by a code such as PHP. Yes they can get login’s and what have you. I recommend using TOR that’s enough said right there. There are many many reasons why to use TOR and your information is encrypted when using this ONION network and your personal IP is safe from the destination. Do not let people scare you about proxies. Get TOR try it out.
Are you sure tor is safe, i have tried it, not sure myself.

Yes, read up on TOR encryption I will not insult your intelligence by posting a link, which you can do by using a search engine. Your ISP knows most of your information now and TOR can even hide some of that information from your ISP.
